Pub Crawls in Kyoto
Kyoto is not a pub crawl city in the way Prague or Krakow are. It is a city with two very good bar streets, a functioning izakaya culture, and a handful of operators who have built crawl formats around them. That is enough to make a crawl worthwhile, as long as expectations track with what Kyoto actually is.
Pontocho is the concentrated bar street: a narrow lantern-lit alley running parallel to the Kamogawa River between Shijo and Sanjo, about 500 metres long and holding enough restaurants, bars, and small clubs to sustain a full evening. Kiyamachi Street, one block east, is more varied and slightly louder, with karaoke boxes and standing bars sitting next to izakayas. Crawls operating in Kyoto use both streets, typically starting at Kiyamachi and moving toward the river. Gion, the geisha district east of the river, has bars in its backstreets but they are small, expensive, and do not fit the crawl format well. The useful nightlife is west of the river.
The Kyoto Nightlife Scene
Pontocho alley and Kiyamachi Street, running parallel for roughly 500 metres in central Kyoto, concentrate the practical nightlife. Pontocho is quieter and narrower; Kiyamachi faces the canal and runs more varied. Both streets feed into each other, which is why crawl formats in Kyoto use them as a circuit rather than a destination.
What you'll pay
Bar beers in Kiyamachi cost ¥600 to ¥900. Sake by the glass at izakayas runs ¥700 to ¥1,200. Karaoke boxes charge ¥500 to ¥800 per person per hour plus drinks. Club entry on weekend nights is ¥1,000 to ¥2,000. Convenience store beers (Family Mart, Lawson) cost ¥220 to ¥280 and are routinely consumed on the riverside benches before entering bars. Prices verified April 2026.
Best nights to go
Friday and Saturday push Kiyamachi to capacity. Cherry blossom season (late March to mid-April) creates atypical mid-week crowds that rival weekend numbers. Golden Week in late April and early May has a similar effect. The rest of the year, weeknights are quiet and some smaller bars close early on Sundays and Mondays.
