The Tokyo Nightlife Scene
Roppongi handles the international nightlife circuit for most backpackers: the bars on and around Roppongi Hills are English-friendly, the clubs accept walk-ins, and it is a 15-minute tube ride from the Shinjuku hostel cluster. Shinjuku's Golden Gai is a different proposition: 200 bars in six alleyways, each holding eight to twelve people, cash only, and many with cover charges and a local preference. Shibuya runs later and louder for a Japanese university crowd.
What you'll pay
Roppongi clubs charge 2,000 to 3,000 yen entry, with one or two drinks included. Beer inside clubs runs 700 to 900 yen; cocktails 1,000 to 1,500 yen. Golden Gai bars charge 500 to 1,000 yen cover per person on top of drink prices, which start at 700 yen per beer. A realistic Roppongi evening from 10pm, two clubs and four rounds, totals 6,000 to 10,000 yen, roughly €36 to €61. Prices verified April 2026.
Best nights to go
Friday and Saturday in Roppongi: the pub crawl only runs those two nights, the clubs are at full capacity, and V2 Tokyo runs late enough to see sunrise if that is the plan. Weeknights are quiet in Roppongi and dead in most Shinjuku clubs. Golden Gai is the exception: it runs every night and Thursday draws a slightly older, more local crowd than the weekend tourist surge.
