The Seoul Nightlife Scene
Hongdae is where most of Seoul's backpacker nightlife concentrates, along the strip between Hongik University Station exits 9 and 3. The crowd is young, mixed Korean and international, and the bars stay open until 6am without formal closing time. Itaewon handles the older expat and LGBTQ+ crowd, quieter on weeknights but still running.
What you'll pay
Cover charges are rare in Hongdae bars; clubs on the main strip charge ₩10,000 to ₩15,000 entry on weekends, occasionally with a drink included. A beer inside a club runs ₩6,000 to ₩8,000. Soju is cheaper at ₩4,000 to ₩5,000 per bottle at pojangmacha street stalls. A realistic evening from 10pm, three bars, one club, and four rounds lands around ₩40,000 to ₩60,000. Prices verified April 2026.
Best nights to go
Friday draws the biggest mixed crowd in Hongdae. Saturday leans heavier on domestic weekend trippers, which makes the bars louder but the conversations shorter. Thursday is the pick for solo travellers: university students are out ahead of the weekend, groups are smaller, and the rooftop bars are actually claimable.
