Party Hostels in Zagreb

Zagreb’s nightlife kicks off in Tkalčićeva Street, a narrow lane packed with bars where locals and travellers spill onto the pavement by 9 PM. The hostel scene here is small but sharp: most places cluster around the Upper Town, putting you within ten minutes of the action. Whole Wide World Hostel runs its own bar downstairs, so the pre-drinks start early, while Chillout Hostel keeps the vibe going until midnight with cheap beer and a lunch menu that saves you from overpriced tourist traps. If you’re after a proper crawl, the city centre pub tours leave from Ban Jelačić Square, yellow-shirted guides herding groups toward shot deals and club entry before 1 AM.

Which Area Should You Stay In?

How Zagreb's nightlife zones break down

Kaptol

A compact area in Upper Town, Kaptol is where most party hostels set up shop. The streets are quiet during the day, but by 9 PM, the sound of clinking glasses spills from hostel bars and nearby pubs. It’s a five-minute walk to Tkalčićeva Street and ten minutes to Ban Jelačić Square, putting you right in the middle of the action.

Best for: Hostels and easy access to nightlife

Tkalčićeva Street

A pedestrian-only street lined with bars, Tkalčićeva is the backbone of Zagreb’s nightlife. During the day, it’s a pleasant place for a coffee, but by evening, the tables fill with groups drinking cheap beer and shots. The street sits between Upper and Lower Town, making it a convenient stop between sightseeing and clubbing.

Best for: Bar-hopping and outdoor drinking

Jarun Lake

A man-made lake on the western edge of the city, Jarun is where locals go to escape the tourist crowds. The area around the lake is packed with clubs and beach bars, especially in summer. Aquarius Club is the biggest draw, but smaller spots along the shore keep the party going until sunrise. It’s a 20-minute tram ride from the city centre.

Best for: Clubs and summer lake parties

Bars and Clubs in Zagreb

Bars, clubs and live music in Zagreb

Whole Wide World Hostel & Bar

Petrinjska ulica 32, Upper Town

This hostel bar doubles as the starting point for most backpacker nights. Happy hour runs from 8 PM to 10 PM, with 2 EUR beers and a shot special. The crowd is a mix of hostel guests and locals who’ve heard about the cheap drinks. By 11 PM, the place is standing-room only, and the staff start handing out flyers for the night’s pub crawl.

Chillout Hostel Bar

Ilica 50, near Ban Jelačić Square

Open until midnight, this bar keeps things simple with 2.50 EUR Karlovačko beer and a lunch menu that’s a lifesaver after a heavy night. The vibe is low-key: more about refuelling than raging: but it’s where you’ll find the last of the hostel crowd nursing hangovers or planning the next night out.

Tkalčićeva Street bars

Tkalčićeva Street, Upper Town

A string of bars along a pedestrian street, each with outdoor seating that spills onto the pavement. Prices climb as you move uphill, but the first few spots near the bottom keep beers under 3 EUR. By 10 PM, the street is packed, and the music from competing bars blends into a messy soundtrack. No cover charges, just show up and grab a table.

Močvara Club

Trnjanska cesta 34, near the river

A grungy, underground club in a former factory, Močvara books live bands and DJs playing everything from punk to electronic. Entry is 5–7 EUR, which includes a drink. The crowd is a mix of students and alternative locals: expect sticky floors and a no-frills atmosphere. Doors open at 11 PM, but the place doesn’t fill until after midnight.

The Garden Brewery

Preradovićeva ulica 42, Upper Town

A rooftop brewery with craft beer and a view over the city. Pints start at 4 EUR, but the real draw is the outdoor terrace, which fills up by sunset. It’s more of a hangout than a party spot, but the crowd often migrates to nearby clubs after a few rounds. Happy hour runs from 4 PM to 6 PM.

Craft beerRooftopSunset viewsChill

Hemingway Bar

Tkalčićeva 36, Upper Town

A dimly lit cocktail bar with expertly mixed drinks, Hemingway is where you go when you’re tired of cheap beer. Cocktails run 8–10 EUR, but the two-for-one happy hour from 6 PM to 8 PM softens the blow. The crowd is older and more subdued: ideal for a quieter start to the night.

Practical Info

🚌
Getting around Zagreb
Trams run from 4 AM to midnight, single tickets cost 1.33 EUR if bought in advance from kiosks: onboard tickets jump to 1.80 EUR. Most hostels sit within a 15-minute walk of the main square, so you’ll rarely need more than a short ride. Night trams (lines 31, 32, 34) operate until 4 AM on Fridays and Saturdays, covering the key nightlife zones.
💰
Budget for a night out
Beer in hostel bars starts at 2.50 EUR, while club drinks hit 4–5 EUR. A pub crawl ticket usually includes a welcome shot and discounted entry, setting you back around 15–20 EUR. If you’re cooking in your hostel kitchen, expect to spend 5–7 EUR on a solid meal at the local Konzum supermarket.
📍
Where to stay
Kaptol, a pocket of Upper Town, packs in most of the party hostels. It’s a five-minute walk to Tkalčićeva Street and ten minutes to Ban Jelačić Square. Whole Wide World and Chillout Hostel are the main players here, both with on-site bars and organised crawls.
🍻
Dress code and entry
Clubs enforce a smart-casual rule: no trainers or flip-flops. The legal drinking age is 18, but bouncers often card anyone who looks under 25. Bars in Tkalčićeva are more relaxed, so you can roll up straight from your hostel without changing.
🕒
When things get busy
Bars fill by 10 PM, clubs peak after midnight. The last tram leaves at 4 AM on weekends, but taxis queue outside the bigger clubs: expect a 5 EUR ride back to Kaptol. If you’re on a pub crawl, the group usually hits the first bar around 9 PM and moves to a club by 1 AM.
🚕
Airport transfers
The airport shuttle bus costs 6 EUR and takes 30–40 minutes to the main bus terminal. From there, it’s a 10-minute tram ride or 15-minute walk to most hostels. Taxis from the airport run about 25 EUR: split between four people it’s almost worth it.
