Zagreb's Christmas market has won Europe's Best Christmas Market five times: four weeks of Advent celebrations across Jelačić Square, Zrinjevac Park, and the Gornji Grad upper town.
Zagreb Advent has won the European Best Christmas Market title awarded by the travel portal European Best Destinations five times, more than any other market. The event spreads across five primary locations: Ban Jelačić Square (central city hub), Zrinjevac Park (classical bandstand and ice rink), the Gornji Grad (upper town, Kamenita Vrata area), the Advent in the Courtyard of the Croatian National Theatre, and the Strossmayerov Trg skating rink. The total footprint covers most of the inner city, making it one of the geographically largest city-centre Christmas events in Europe.
Zagreb in December averages 2–6°C with occasional snow from late November. The market runs daily from 10am to midnight on most sites, with shorter hours on Sundays and Christmas Day itself. The Zrinjevac ice rink operates with rental skates available (HRK 25–40, approximately €3–5 per session). The mulled wine (kuhano vino) at Zrinjevac is the most-cited specific product: a cup runs approximately €2. Hostel dorm beds in Zagreb during Advent run €20–30 a night, lower than most Western European capitals during the same period. The city centre is walkable: Jelačić Square to the upper town funicular (Uspinjača, €0.66 each way) to the Gornji Grad takes 25 minutes on foot or 15 with the funicular.

Day-by-day breakdown
Weekday afternoons are the least crowded time to visit. The Zrinjevac bandstand runs live music from 5pm on most weekdays. The surrounding stalls open from noon. The Jelačić Square central installation runs a light and music show on the hour after dark (from around 4:30pm in December). Walking the full circuit from Jelačić to Zrinjevac, then up the Uspinjača funicular to the Gornji Grad and down through Kamenita Vrata takes 90 minutes at a comfortable pace.
Weekend evenings from 6pm to 9pm are the market at its densest and most atmospheric. The Gornji Grad (Grič district, accessible via the Uspinjača funicular or on foot up Radićeva Street) is noticeably less crowded than Jelačić Square and has its own cluster of stalls and atmospheric lighting around the Lotrščak Tower and Kamenita Vrata (Stone Gate). The upper town's bars on Ćirilometodska Street run late and are warmer alternatives when the outdoor temperature drops below 0°C.
