The Ho Chi Minh Nightlife Scene
District 1 handles almost everything. Bui Vien Street goes pedestrian-only from 7pm and runs wall-to-wall bars for its full length, a structure that means you do not need a plan: just walk the strip and stop when something works. Pham Ngu Lao Street feeds in from the west; De Tham Street holds the hostel cluster. The crowd is overwhelmingly backpacker international, particularly between 8pm and midnight.
What you'll pay
Beers at street-facing bars on Bui Vien cost 25,000 to 40,000 VND. Cocktails run 80,000 VND at the cheaper spots; rooftop venues on Nguyen Cu Trinh Street charge 120,000 to 150,000 VND. Club entry on the strip is typically free before 11pm, 100,000 VND after. A realistic night from 8pm to 2am, including drinks and one club entry, lands around 250,000 to 400,000 VND (£8 to £13). Prices verified April 2026.
Best nights to go
Thursday and Saturday carry the most energy on the strip. Weeknights are still busy because the hostel population turns over constantly. March through May offers the most comfortable conditions for outdoor drinking; the dry season keeps beer gardens and rooftop terraces full. Major Vietnamese holidays can thin out bar staffing unexpectedly.
