Scandinavia's most respected music festival: 35,000 people over three days in Slottsskogen Park, Gothenburg, with Stockholm as the backpacker base.
Annual, second week of August. Held at Slottsskogen Park, Gothenburg. Exact 2026 dates to be confirmed.
Way Out West has been running in Gothenburg since 2007 and has built a consistent reputation as the Scandi festival with the strongest editorial line-up. The programming skews indie, hip-hop, and electronic: the kind of artists who appear at Primavera Sound and Pitchfork Festival. The venue is Slottsskogen, a large urban park in central Gothenburg, which means the festival is walkable from the city's hostel cluster rather than requiring shuttle buses to a remote site.
Gothenburg is not Stockholm. This is worth stating plainly. Stockholm is the BPH anchor city for Sweden, and Way Out West requires a 3-hour train journey west to Gothenburg. Many Stockholm-based backpackers make this journey specifically for the festival: it is practical enough as an overnight or extended trip. The train from Stockholm to Gothenburg on SJ (Swedish Railways) takes 3 hours and costs SEK 150–600 (£11–£45) depending on how far in advance you book.
Gothenburg itself rewards a night regardless of the festival. The Haga neighbourhood: cobbled streets, wooden houses, a concentration of independent cafés: is the most distinctive part of the city and about 15 minutes walk from Slottsskogen. The fish market at Feskekörkan (the 'fish church') on Rosenlundskanalen is open Tuesday to Sunday. Gothenburg's hostel options are limited by Stockholm's standards; booking ahead for festival weekend is essential.
Way Out West has a strong sustainability profile that is a genuine part of its identity rather than marketing. The festival is plant-based (no meat sold on site), partners with environmental organisations, and has a carbon offsetting programme. This attracts a specific audience segment that overlaps with the festival's music programming: creative, environmentally aware, and disproportionately likely to write about the experience online. Worth knowing as context for what kind of crowd you will be in.

Stockholm is the international gateway: Arlanda Airport connects directly to the city by the Arlanda Express in 18 minutes. Gothenburg is 3 hours by SJ high-speed train from Stockholm, and also directly accessible from Copenhagen (3h15m) and Oslo (3h45m) by train.
Day-by-day breakdown
The SJ high-speed train from Stockholm Central to Gothenburg runs hourly and takes 3 hours. Book online at sj.se: prices drop significantly with 2–4 weeks advance purchase. Arrive in Gothenburg on Wednesday evening for a night of acclimatisation before the festival opens Thursday. Haga neighbourhood bars are a 15-minute walk from Gothenburg Central and are the standard pre-festival gathering point.
Gates open at noon daily. The main stage (Flamman) and four supporting stages are spread across Slottsskogen, an 18th-century park with mature trees providing natural shade. Walkable from the Linnéstaden and Haga hostel areas: approximately 20 minutes on foot. The festival perimeter is compact; crossing from one stage to another takes under 10 minutes. Last acts finish around midnight.
Way Out West does not run until the early hours: the park closes at midnight. The continuation is in Gothenburg's clubs: Pustervik (Järntorget, 10 minutes from Slottsskogen) is the best festival overflow venue, running late-night club events specifically programmed around WOW weekends. Trädgårn club (near Avenyn) is larger and more mainstream.
