Ten days of classical chamber music in Hvar's historic venues: concerts in the Arsenal Theatre, outdoor performances in the Fortica fortress, and recitals in village churches on the island's quieter south coast.
The TAM TAM Music Festival is a classical and chamber music festival running for ten days across Hvar island every July. The main performances take place in the Arsenal Theatre on Hvar Town's main square, one of the oldest municipal theatres in Europe (constructed 1612), and at the Fortica fortress on the hillside above the town, where open-air evening concerts take place with views across the Pakleni Islands and the Dalmatian coast. Additional concerts are programmed in village churches on the southern and eastern coasts of the island, including in Jelsa and Vrboska, which gives the festival a reach across the island rather than concentrating solely on Hvar Town.
Hvar in July is busy: the island is one of the most visited in Croatia, attracting high-season yacht tourism, beach clubs on the Pakleni Islands, and a party scene centred on Carpe Diem Beach and Hula Hula beach bar. The TAM TAM festival provides a counterpoint to this. The classical programme draws an audience that typically has different priorities from the yacht week crowd, and the concerts in the Arsenal Theatre are architecturally one of the best concert environments in the Adriatic. Tickets are not expensive by classical music standards and are available from the festival box office on the main square or online. Cat Cora (the Pakleni Islands' most famous beach club) and the Fortica fortress concerts occupy very different Hvar experiences and can coexist in the same trip.

Day-by-day breakdown
Water taxis from Hvar Town pier run to the Pakleni Islands for 40–60 HRK (approximately £4–£6) and connect to Palmizana beach and the island of Jerolim. The crossing takes 10–15 minutes. The Fortica fortress above Hvar Town is a 20-minute walk up from the main square and has views across the archipelago; entry is 50 HRK. The old town itself is one of Croatia's most attractive port towns; the main square (Trg Sv. Stjepana) has shaded café seating under the cathedral loggia.
Arsenal Theatre concerts start at 9pm. The building's stone interior is cool even in July heat, which makes it a welcome venue for the evening. Fortica concerts start later (around 9:30pm to wait for full dark) and require the uphill walk; bring a layer as the fortress terrace gets a breeze. After concerts, the bars along Hvar Town's harbour waterfront stay open until 2am.
