Tallinn's Old Town (Vanalinn) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site consisting of two walled areas: the lower town (Unterstadt) and the upper town (Toompea, with the castle and cathedral). The 2.5km of medieval wall with 28 towers is largely intact. Within the walls, the street network dates from the 13th-14th centuries: limestone paving, Gothic merchant houses, and the Town Hall Square (Raekoja Plats). The old town is dense with bars and restaurants operating in medieval vaulted cellars and tower bases: Hell Hunt (Tallinn's oldest pub, opened 1993), Nimeta Baar (No Name Bar), and III Draakon in the Town Hall itself are among the most established.
Old Town Days (Tallinna Vanalinna päevad) in the first week of June is the year's biggest cultural event in the old town: street theatre, medieval crafts demonstrations, fire shows, and outdoor concerts on Town Hall Square. Most events are free. The old town in summer fills with a mix of Finnish day-trippers (the Helsinki-Tallinn ferry takes 2 hours; Finns come specifically for the cheaper alcohol), Scandinavian backpackers, and domestic Estonians. Winter is when the old town is at its most atmospheric: the Christmas market runs from late November through January, and the stone streets are empty except for the bar crawls moving between the warm cellar venues.

Day-by-day breakdown
The programme is published at vanalinnapaevad.ee in April. Street theatre on Raekoja Plats from 11am; fire and acrobatics shows at dusk (approximately 9pm in early June). The medieval crafts market in the Dominican Monastery courtyard runs 10am-6pm. Free entry to all street events. Evening concerts at the square have ticket prices of €5-15. Bars in the old town stay open until 2-3am during the festival.
Hell Hunt on Pikk Street is the standard first stop: Estonian and Baltic beers, outdoor terrace in summer, vaulted interior year-round. A 500ml Saku or A. Le Coq beer costs €4-6. Nimeta Baar (No Name Bar) is the backpacker staple: cheap drinks, mixed crowd, open until 3am. Town Hall Square has the most scenic outdoor drinking in summer: the medieval towers form the backdrop and the terraces run until midnight. The streets behind Raekoja Plats (particularly Vene and Rataskaevu) have less touristy bars with lower prices.
