Old Town

The medieval core of Tallinn, where cobbled streets wind past 15th-century merchant houses and hidden courtyards. Raekoja plats is the main square, surrounded by pubs like Fat Margaret’s and shot bars on Viru street. Most hostels are here, so you’re never far from a 3 a.m. kebab.

Kalamaja

Former fishing suburb turned hipster enclave, just west of the Old Town. Wooden houses line Telliskivi street, home to craft-beer bars and vegan cafés. Nightlife is low-key: think warehouse parties and vinyl bars: but it’s a 15-minute walk to the clubs in the commercial centre.

Commercial Centre (Viru Keskus)

Modern district south-east of the Old Town, built around the Viru Keskus shopping mall. Clubs like Prive Lounge and Hollywood sit on Tartu maantee, a 10-minute walk from the mall. The area is safe but less charming: expect chain stores and neon signs.

Basement club on Vana-Posti street with two floors: drum & bass upstairs, techno downstairs. Entry is €8 after midnight, includes one drink. Crowd is 20s backpackers and Erasmus students. Gets packed by 1 a.m. on Fridays: arrive early for a spot near the speakers.

Pub in a 16th-century tower with views over the harbour. Pint of local IPA is €5, and the kitchen does burgers until midnight. Live folk bands play Thursdays from 9 p.m. Outdoor seating fills up fast in summer: grab a table by 7 p.m.

Upscale club in the commercial centre with bottle service and house DJs. Entry is €10, but ladies get in free before midnight. Dress code is smart casual: no trainers. Open until 6 a.m. on Saturdays; expect a queue after 1 a.m.

Irish pub on Müürivahe street with €4 Guinness and €6 Irish car bombs. Hosts the Mad Monk’s Pub Crawl every Thursday and Saturday: €15 gets you entry to four bars, a shot at each, and a free T-shirt. Crawl starts at 9 p.m. at the pub.

Two-level club on Tartu maantee with hip-hop downstairs and chart hits upstairs. Entry is €7, includes one drink. Cover charge drops to €5 if you arrive before 11 p.m. Open until 5 a.m. on weekends; bouncers enforce ID checks strictly.

Shot bar on Viru street specialising in the city’s signature herbal liqueur. Try the Vana Tallinn Colada for €6. Open from 11 a.m. until 2 a.m. daily. The bar is tiny: just six stools: so it’s standing room only after 9 p.m.
