What Is Siargao International Surfing Cup?

Cloud 9 is one of the best right-hand reef breaks in the world, and the Siargao International Surfing Cup is the event that put this small Philippine island on the global surf map. The competition runs at the end of September when typhoon swells push consistent 6 to 10 foot waves onto the reef. The viewing platform at Cloud 9 holds around 200 spectators and fills early on competition days.

Siargao's appeal extends well beyond the competition itself. The island runs on island time: no traffic lights, one main road, and a pace of life that makes Bali feel like a metropolis. General Luna is the main backpacker town, with surf hostels, beach bars, and restaurants lining the waterfront. The party scene is relaxed but consistent: Harana, Bravo, and RumBar are the main nightlife spots.

The week of the surfing cup brings beach parties, live music, and a festival atmosphere to General Luna. Local and international DJs play sunset sessions. Filipino street food stalls line the waterfront. The combination of world-class surfing during the day and beach parties at night makes this one of Southeast Asia's best festival weeks.

Non-surfers are well catered for. Island-hopping trips to Naked Island, Daku Island, and Guyam Island run daily and cost around 1,500 PHP (roughly GBP 21) for a full day including lunch. The Sugba Lagoon, a turquoise swimming hole surrounded by limestone cliffs, is a 90-minute boat ride from General Luna.

Practical Tips

Reef shoes for Cloud 9
The reef is sharp and shallow. Even if you are just wading to the viewing platform at low tide, reef shoes save you from coral cuts that take weeks to heal in tropical humidity.
Cloud 9 is not for beginners
The reef break is powerful, shallow, and unforgiving. Beginners should surf at Jacking Horse or Quicksilver beach breaks. Do not paddle out at Cloud 9 unless you can confidently handle 6-foot waves over reef.
Bring cash in pesos
ATMs on Siargao are unreliable and charge high fees. Withdraw pesos in Cebu or Manila before flying in. Card acceptance is limited to larger resorts.
Flights sell out early
Siargao has a small airport with limited daily flights from Cebu and Manila. Competition week flights sell out 6 to 8 weeks ahead. Book early.
