Haad Rin beach turns into Southeast Asia's biggest monthly party: 30,000 people, fire shows, and multiple stages until sunrise.
Monthly. Upcoming full moon dates: 3 Apr 2026, 1 May 2026, 31 May 2026, 30 Jun 2026, 29 Jul 2026, 28 Aug 2026. December and January editions draw the largest crowds.
Haad Rin beach on the southern tip of Koh Phangan has hosted a full moon party every month since the mid-1980s. What started as a small gathering of backpackers on a remote Thai island now draws up to 30,000 people on peak nights: December and January: and rarely drops below 10,000 even in quieter months. The beach stretches roughly 600 metres and is divided into sections, each with its own sound system, DJ, and bar. Fire shows run throughout the night.
The party starts around 9pm and runs until well past sunrise. Buckets: plastic beach pails filled with Thai whisky, soda, and Red Bull: are the drink of choice and cost around 200 THB (approximately £5). They are considerably stronger than they taste. Drinks across the board cost two to three times Bangkok prices on full moon nights; factor this into your budget before you arrive.
The satellite events are worth knowing about. Half Moon Festival runs twice monthly in the jungle above Haad Rin, with a capacity cap and ticketed entry. Jungle Experience is a smaller, psy-trance-oriented gathering in a forest clearing. These run on separate dates and draw a different crowd: calmer, less chaotic. If you are on the island for a week, doing all three gives you a full picture of what Koh Phangan's party scene actually is.
Safety is specific rather than general. Drink spiking does occur: buy your own buckets, keep them in your hands, and accept drinks only from sealed bottles. Waterproof your phone before you arrive: the beach gets crowded and wet. Lock valuables at the hostel. Wear shoes you do not mind ruining. The fire jumprope and fire limbo are genuinely dangerous and the burns unit at the local clinic is busy on full moon mornings.

Koh Phangan is a 30-minute ferry from Koh Samui. Most travellers fly into Koh Samui from Bangkok (1h 10min) and cross by ferry. The cheaper route is the overnight bus from Bangkok's Southern Bus Terminal to Surat Thani, followed by the Donsak–Koh Phangan ferry: around 10–11 hours total but a fraction of the airfare.
Day-by-day breakdown
Ferries and songthaews from elsewhere on the island start filling up from midday. Check into your hostel and walk the 200–800 metres to the beach depending on where you are staying. The beach bars open in the afternoon and are significantly cheaper and quieter before 9pm. Eat a proper meal: the area around Haad Rin Nok (the party beach) has several decent restaurants. Do not start drinking on an empty stomach.
The beach builds quickly from around 7pm. Fire shows start at dusk: performers spin and skip with flaming ropes along the shoreline. The main stages along the beach each have their own DJs cycling through commercial dance, drum and bass, reggae, and hip-hop depending on the section. Bucket prices are highest closest to the sea; walk one bar row back and they drop by 30–40 THB.
The beach reaches capacity around midnight on busy months. Every section of Haad Rin Nok is packed. The sound systems overlap at the edges, which is loud and chaotic by design. This is the period with the most fire acts, the busiest bars, and the densest crowd. Navigation from one end of the beach to the other can take 20 minutes. Moving in pairs or groups is practical, not just cautious.
A significant portion of the crowd leaves between 2am and 4am. The remaining contingent tends to consolidate around the stronger stages at the Haad Rin Nok end. Sunrise at Haad Rin is around 6am year-round. Watching it from the beach at the end of a full moon party is something people describe for years afterwards: which is the most accurate thing you can say about it.
Ferries back to Koh Samui run from around 7am from Haad Rin pier. The beach is considerably less attractive in daylight: it takes a full day to be cleaned and restored. Most people sleep until midday and then head to the quieter beaches on the island's north coast, including Thong Nai Pan and Bottle Beach.
Take it easy. Find a local cafe, eat a proper meal, and sort out onward travel. Most hostels offer late checkout if you ask the night before.
