Lao New Year in the UNESCO World Heritage old town: three days of water fights, temple processions, and a gentler version of Songkran set against gold-spired monasteries.
Annual. 14 to 16 April every year.
Pi Mai Lao (Lao New Year) falls on the same dates as Thai Songkran but the atmosphere in Luang Prabang is distinctly different. Where Bangkok and Chiang Mai become high-pressure water battlegrounds, Luang Prabang mixes gentle water blessing ceremonies at its 34 temples with spontaneous water fights on the main streets. The UNESCO-protected old town, set on a peninsula between the Mekong and Nam Khan rivers, provides a backdrop that no other water festival can match.
The three days follow a traditional sequence. Day one (14 April) is the last day of the old year: house cleaning, temple visits, and the bathing of Buddha statues with scented water. Day two (15 April) is the day between years: neither old nor new. Day three (16 April) is New Year's Day: the alms-giving ceremony at dawn is followed by city-wide celebrations.
The Naga boat races on the Mekong are the sporting highlight. Long wooden boats with dragon-prow carvings race between crews from different temples and villages. The riverside fills with spectators from early morning. Street parades feature traditional Lao dancing, elaborate floats, and a Miss Pi Mai beauty pageant.
Luang Prabang is small enough to walk everywhere. The main street (Sisavangvong Road) runs the length of the peninsula and is the centre of the water fights. Temples, night market stalls, French colonial cafes, and the Mekong riverbank are all within 10 minutes' walk. This is Southeast Asia's most beautiful small town and Pi Mai is its most joyful week.

The Laos-China railway from Vientiane takes 2 hours. Flights from Bangkok are the fastest option from outside Laos. The 2-day slow boat from the Thai border is a classic backpacker route.
