Europe's biggest free open-air New Year's Eve party: 1 million people, 2 kilometres of stages between Brandenburg Gate and Victory Column, and fireworks over the Reichstag.
Annual. Every New Year's Eve.
Berlin's New Year's Eve party at the Brandenburg Gate is the largest free open-air celebration in Europe. The Strasse des 17. Juni, the 2-kilometre boulevard running from Brandenburg Gate to the Victory Column, becomes a pedestrian party zone with multiple stages, food stalls, and a midnight fireworks display over the Reichstag and Quadriga that is broadcast live to 500 million viewers worldwide.
The official party (Silvester am Brandenburger Tor) runs from 7pm to 2am, with live music on 3 stages. Past acts have included international pop, electronic, and rock artists. Admission is free but the area is fenced with bag checks and no glass bottles allowed. The fenced zone fills from 6pm and reaches capacity (roughly 100,000 inside the perimeter) well before midnight.
Berlin's club scene is the other half of the NYE equation. Berghain, Tresor, Watergate, and KitKatClub all run extended NYE sets that start on the 31st and do not end until 2 or 3 January. Berghain's NYE marathon is legendary: up to 60 hours of continuous techno. Tickets for these events sell out weeks in advance and cost EUR 20 to 40.
The rest of Berlin becomes an unregulated fireworks zone. Germans buy commercial-grade fireworks legally in the days before Silvester and set them off in every park, street, and bridge. The result is spectacular and occasionally terrifying. The sky over the city explodes at midnight from every direction. Wear a hat, keep your wits about you, and enjoy the chaos.

Berlin Brandenburg Airport has budget flights from across Europe. The airport express train reaches the city centre in 30 minutes.
