Gili Trawangan’s nightlife runs along a 500-metre strip of sand where the island’s only road meets the sea. By 10 p.m., the beachfront is packed with backpackers spilling out of places like Sama Sama Reggae Bar and Rudy’s Pub, cocktails in hand, feet in the sand. The hostel scene is small but social: most places have a pool bar that doubles as the de facto common room. Gili Castle and Broken Compass are the two biggest names, both five minutes’ walk from the harbour and ten from the southern end of the strip. Expect dorms from £4 a night, happy hours until 8 p.m., and a crowd that’s more about beach parties than clubbing till dawn.
