What Is Wellington Jazz Festival?

Wellington Jazz Festival runs for five days each June, using Wellington's compact geography to concentrate 40 venues within a 15-minute walking circuit. The waterfront stage at Frank Kitts Park faces Lambton Harbour and is the largest outdoor venue at approximately 3,000 capacity. Cuba Street's bars, notably Meow on Edward Street and Arty Bees Books (which hosts daytime sessions), form a secondary circuit one kilometre west. The Michael Fowler Centre on Wakefield Street hosts the major ticketed evening concerts, typically international headline acts and the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra crossover events.

Wellington in June is cool and frequently rainy: average temperatures run 8–12°C with short daylight hours. The festival runs at the onset of New Zealand's winter, which is part of its character: the waterfront stages are tented or partially sheltered, and the indoor programme is extensive enough to spend the entire festival without outdoor exposure. Wellington has a well-established café and bar culture around Te Aro and the Cuba Quarter. Hostel dorm beds run NZD 35–55 (approximately £17–27) a night, comparable to Auckland but with a more walkable festival footprint.

Getting There

What to Expect

Day-by-day breakdown

Opening Weekend

Waterfront stage and Cuba Street bar circuit

The opening weekend concentrates free events at Frank Kitts Park and Cuba Street. The waterfront stage runs afternoon sets from noon on Saturday and Sunday. Cuba Street's bars programme independently, with most venues running back-to-back sets from 5pm. Courtenay Place, 5 minutes south of Cuba Street, has the main late-night bar strip. The Blue Oyster Bus from the waterfront to Cuba Street runs as a free festival shuttle on peak days.

Midweek Programme

Michael Fowler Centre ticketed concerts

The midweek evenings at the Michael Fowler Centre carry the festival's highest-profile ticketed programme. Concerts typically start at 7:30pm. Pre-concert dining on Wakefield Street and the nearby Civic Square has a limited selection: book in advance or eat before 6:30pm. The venue is 200 metres from Wellington Central train station and within walking distance of all Old City hostel accommodation.

Practical Tips

Download the Jazz Fest app for the live schedule
The Wellington Jazz Festival app (available via jazzfestival.co.nz) publishes the real-time programme across all 40 venues. Venues add and change sets during the week; the app is updated same-day. The printed programme from the festival box office at the Michael Fowler Centre foyer is the backup.
Wellington's weather in June: treat it as variable
Wellington is famously windy and the June weather is unpredictable. The waterfront stage is exposed to Cook Strait winds: a waterproof windproof jacket is functional kit, not optional. The city's café and bar circuit means you are never more than 200 metres from an indoor venue if conditions deteriorate. Average June temperature is 9°C.
Cuba Street is the festival's social spine
Cuba Street between Vivian Street and Abel Smith Street is Wellington's arts and music district. During the Jazz Festival it runs a parallel programme with most bars starting sets from 5pm. Meow on Edward Street (off Cuba), Freelancer on Vivian Street, and Mojo Coffee on Customhouse Quay (for daytime sessions) are reliably active. Cover charges on Cuba Street are rare: most sets are walk-in free.
Michael Fowler Centre tickets sell out 3–4 weeks ahead
The Michael Fowler Centre's ticketed concerts are the festival's most prestigious and sell out the earliest. The New Zealand Symphony Orchestra collaborations and the headline international acts typically sell out within two weeks of release. Book through Ticketek.co.nz when the programme drops (usually early April for the June festival).
Accommodation: book in Te Aro, not the CBD fringe
Te Aro (the area around Cuba Street and Courtenay Place) has the best hostel options and is within walking distance of all festival venues. Base Backpackers on Cuba Street and Nomads Capital on Wakefield Street are the main budget options. The festival boosts occupancy significantly: book 4–6 weeks ahead. CBD fringe options near the railway station are available if Te Aro fills.
The Interislander ferry to the South Island departs from the waterfront
Interislander and Bluebridge ferries to Picton (South Island) depart from the Wellington ferry terminal, 15 minutes north of Frank Kitts Park on foot. The crossing takes 3.5 hours (Interislander) or 3 hours (Bluebridge). Fares from NZD 55 per person one way. Booking in advance is essential in June: the ferries serve both tourists and freight and are frequently full.
