What Is Warsaw Summer Jazz Days?

Warsaw Summer Jazz Days began in 2003 and has grown into one of Poland's most attended free music events, using the reconstructed Old Town market square (Rynek Starego Miasta) as its main stage. The square holds around 8,000 and fills for evening headliners. A second stage operates on the Vistula riverbank below the Old Town, accessible by the steps from the Castle Square or by walking down to the Wybrzeże Gdańskie riverside boulevard. The programme mixes mainstream jazz, Latin jazz, soul, and blues across four days, with the most experimentally focused sessions routed to club venues in the Praga district across the river.

Warsaw in July averages 24–26°C with long evenings: sunset after 9pm means outdoor shows run in full daylight until 9:30pm, which alters the atmosphere compared to most European festival nights. The Old Town is fully pedestrianised during the festival and dense with café terraces and food stalls from midday. Hostel accommodation in Warsaw's Old Town and the Śródmieście (city centre) district runs PLN 60–100 (£12–20) per dorm bed, making it among the most affordable capital cities in the EU. The metro line 2 connects the western districts to the city centre, with Nowy Świat-Uniwersytet station a 10-minute walk from the festival main stage.

Getting There

What to Expect

Day-by-day breakdown

Day 1 (Thursday)

Opening night, Old Town market square

The festival opens on Thursday evening. The market square stage starts at 6pm with local Polish jazz acts, building to a headliner around 8:30pm. Thursday is significantly less crowded than the weekend days: arriving at 7pm gives a central position without queuing. The surrounding cafés on the square (U Fukiera, Kompania Piwna) have outdoor terraces that provide a partial view of the stage without entering the standing area.

Day 3 (Saturday)

Peak day, Vistula riverbank and main stage

Saturday runs the strongest programme across both stages simultaneously. The Vistula riverbank stage is active from 4pm, with the Old Town stage running from 6pm. The riverside Bulwary (waterfront promenade) is popular throughout the day independently of the festival: food trucks and bars run the full stretch from Świętokrzyski Bridge north to the Old Town steps. The headliner slot on the market square runs 9–11pm. Post-concert, the Praga district clubs across the Poniatowski Bridge pick up from midnight.

Practical Tips

Arrive at the Old Town stage by 7pm on weekends
Weekend evening sets at the Rynek Starego Miasta fill the square to 8,000 capacity by 9pm. Arriving at 7pm gives a central standing position with an unobstructed view of the stage. By 8:30pm the square is shoulder-to-shoulder and new arrivals are pushed to the perimeter. Thursday and Friday evenings are significantly more relaxed.
The Praga district is the late-night extension
Warsaw's Praga district (east bank of the Vistula, accessible by tram across Poniatowski Bridge) has the city's most active underground club scene. Skład Butelek on Inżynierska Street and Saturator on Zabraniecka Street run late-night jazz and electronic programmes during the festival week. The bridge walk from the Old Town takes 20 minutes; tram line 24 covers it in 8 minutes.
Polish zloty: Kantor exchange offices beat ATM rates
Poland uses the zloty (PLN). Kantor (private exchange office) rates in Warsaw's Old Town and Śródmieście districts consistently beat ATM rates for EUR and GBP conversions by 3–5%. Look for Kantor signs on the side streets around Nowy Świat; the main tourist street offices near the market square charge higher margins.
The Vistula riverbank is free all day regardless of festival tickets
The Bulwary Vistula waterfront promenade is a public space. The festival stage on the riverbank is free to access. The promenade's food trucks and bars run independently of the festival programme from mid-morning. Bikes are available for hire from Veturilo stations along the riverside at PLN 3 for the first 20 minutes.
Warsaw Chopin Airport to city centre: bus 175 or metro line 2
Bus 175 from Chopin Airport (WAW) runs to the city centre in 30–45 minutes (PLN 3.40 flat fare). Metro line 2 connects from Rondo Daszyńskiego (20 minutes west by bus) to the city centre in 8 minutes. A taxi to Old Town costs PLN 35–50 (£7–10) using the official Bolt or FreeNow apps; avoid unmarked taxis at the terminal.
The Żoliborz and Mokotów neighbourhoods are cheaper than Old Town
Hostels in Żoliborz (north of the city centre, metro: Plac Wilsona) and Mokotów (south, metro: Wilanowska) run PLN 20–40 (£4–8) cheaper per night than equivalent Old Town beds during festival week. Both are 15 minutes from the festival by metro. Old Town beds are more convenient but premium-priced in summer.
