What Is Vilnius Festival?

Vilnius Festival is Lithuania's leading international classical music event, running annually since 1979. Concerts take place across the Old Town's Baroque and Gothic church interiors, including St Anne's Church on Maironio Street, St Casimir's Church on Didžioji Street, and the Cathedral Basilica of St Stanislaus at Cathedral Square. The acoustic quality of these spaces is the festival's defining characteristic: a chamber ensemble in the vaulted nave of St Anne's Church is one of the more precise musical experiences available in the Baltic states.

Vilnius Old Town is compact enough to walk all festival venues within 20 minutes. The Cathedral Square end is the formal anchor, with larger orchestral performances; the university district around Universiteto and Pilies Streets has the more intimate chamber events. Evening starts are typically 7pm or 8pm. The Užupis neighbourhood (a self-declared republic and arts district 10 minutes east of Cathedral Square on foot) has the highest concentration of restaurants and bars for pre- and post-concert dining. Hostel dorm beds in the Old Town run €15–25 a night, making Vilnius one of Europe's more affordable festival cities.

Day-by-day breakdown

Opening Night

Cathedral Square orchestral concert

The opening night concert traditionally takes place in front of the Cathedral Basilica in Cathedral Square. The outdoor setting holds 3,000–5,000 and is free to attend. International orchestras and soloists have included the Lithuanian Philharmonic, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the St Petersburg Philharmonic in previous years. Gates open 90 minutes before the performance. Cathedral Square is 10 minutes on foot from the main hostel district on Gedimino Avenue.

Mid-Festival Week

Church interior concerts and Old Town circuit

The bulk of the festival programme falls in the second week, with ticketed concerts running nightly in the church interiors. St Anne's Church (late Gothic, 1500) holds around 200 and sells out its chamber programme earliest. The Vilnius Cathedral crypt offers one of the more unusual acoustic settings in the festival. The Užupis arts district hosts informal afternoon performances in the Angel Square area on most mid-festival afternoons.

Practical Tips

Book St Anne's Church concerts immediately when the programme drops
St Anne's Church concerts sell out faster than any other venue in the Vilnius Festival programme, often within a week of the programme announcement in March. The church holds around 200; chamber quartets and piano recitals here are the festival's most sought-after tickets. Buy through vilniausfestivalis.lt the day the programme is released.
Vilnius Card covers all museum entries and some transport
The Vilnius City Card (€20 for 24 hours, €35 for 72 hours) includes entry to 40+ museums and galleries, unlimited city bus and trolleybus travel, and discounts at select restaurants. The Old Town is walkable but the card is worthwhile if you plan to visit the National Museum of Lithuania on Arsenalo Street or the Užupis Art Incubator.
Užupis for pre-concert dinner: better value than Pilies Street
Pilies Street (the Old Town's main pedestrian axis) has the highest restaurant prices in Vilnius. Užupis, 10 minutes east across the Vilnelė river, has comparable quality at 20–30% lower prices. Restobar Užupis on Užupio Street and Creperie on Malūnų Street are reliable options. Pre-concert timing: most Užupis restaurants fill from 6pm; book or arrive before then.
June weather: warm evenings but pack a layer for church interiors
Vilnius in June averages 20–24°C during the day. Church interiors remain at 14–16°C regardless of outdoor temperature: bring a light layer specifically for evening concerts in stone buildings. Outdoor Cathedral Square events are comfortable in summer clothing after 6pm.
Flights into Vilnius Airport (VNO): low-cost carriers from most European hubs
Ryanair and Wizz Air serve Vilnius Airport from London Stansted, Berlin, Warsaw, and other European hubs. Return fares from London average £50–90 outside peak periods. The airport is 6 kilometres south of the Old Town: bus route 1 and 2 run to the Lukiškių Square stop on Gedimino Avenue in 20 minutes (€1 flat fare).
Spend a morning at Trakai Castle: 28 kilometres, frequent buses
Trakai Island Castle, on a lake island 28 kilometres west of Vilnius, is the most visited site in Lithuania. Buses depart Vilnius bus station on Sodų Street every 30–60 minutes (€2.50, 40 minutes). The return trip takes half a day. The castle museum covers the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and its Karaite minority history. Combine with lunch at one of the kibinai (Karaite pastry) cafés on Karaimų Street.
