Europe's longest-running charity gala for HIV/AIDS: an annual masked ball at Vienna City Hall drawing 40,000 attendees to one of the world's most elaborately staged public events.
The Life Ball has taken place at Vienna's Rathaus (City Hall) every May since 1992, raising funds for HIV/AIDS organisations internationally. It is a full-dress event: the dress code is 'AIDSwear', interpreted as theatrical costume, and the entry procession down the Red Carpet on Rathausplatz is a public spectacle accessible without a ticket. The indoor programme includes fashion shows by major designers, live performances, and the formal ball within the Rathaus's ceremonial halls. The event raises approximately €2–4 million per year for partner organisations.
For travellers, the Life Ball splits into two tiers: the free outdoor Red Carpet event and the ticketed indoor ball. The Red Carpet procession on Rathausplatz runs from 7pm to 10pm and attracts tens of thousands of spectators, with costumes ranging from haute couture to body paint. Rathausplatz is accessible by U-Bahn line U2 to Rathaus station, a direct stop. The indoor ball runs from 10pm until 6am; tickets at the lower end of the price range give access to the main hall and selected areas. Vienna's ball season (Ballsaison) runs October to April, but the Life Ball is the single most internationally recognised event in the calendar.

Day-by-day breakdown
The day begins with ticket collection and check-in for indoor guests from 6pm. The Red Carpet procession on Rathausplatz starts at 7pm and is free to watch from behind the barriers. The Rathaus gates open for ticketholders at 9:30pm. The indoor programme begins at 10pm with the official opening ceremony, fashion show, and first dance. The ball floor opens for general dancing by midnight. Vienna's U-Bahn runs all night on Fridays and Saturdays (24-hour service on these nights), making transport straightforward.
The day after the Life Ball is an unofficial fixture in Vienna's cultural calendar. The Naschmarkt on Linke Wienzeile (U4 to Kettenbrückengasse) opens at 6am and is the city's main food market: its street food stalls are the standard post-ball breakfast destination. The surrounding Wieden neighbourhood coffee houses (Café Schwarzenberg, Café Landtmann near the Rathaus) open from 7am and welcome guests in costumes without comment, which is very Vienna.
