What Is Vienna Life Ball?

The Life Ball has taken place at Vienna's Rathaus (City Hall) every May since 1992, raising funds for HIV/AIDS organisations internationally. It is a full-dress event: the dress code is 'AIDSwear', interpreted as theatrical costume, and the entry procession down the Red Carpet on Rathausplatz is a public spectacle accessible without a ticket. The indoor programme includes fashion shows by major designers, live performances, and the formal ball within the Rathaus's ceremonial halls. The event raises approximately €2–4 million per year for partner organisations.

For travellers, the Life Ball splits into two tiers: the free outdoor Red Carpet event and the ticketed indoor ball. The Red Carpet procession on Rathausplatz runs from 7pm to 10pm and attracts tens of thousands of spectators, with costumes ranging from haute couture to body paint. Rathausplatz is accessible by U-Bahn line U2 to Rathaus station, a direct stop. The indoor ball runs from 10pm until 6am; tickets at the lower end of the price range give access to the main hall and selected areas. Vienna's ball season (Ballsaison) runs October to April, but the Life Ball is the single most internationally recognised event in the calendar.

Getting There

What to Expect

Day-by-day breakdown

Ball Night

Red Carpet procession and indoor gala

The day begins with ticket collection and check-in for indoor guests from 6pm. The Red Carpet procession on Rathausplatz starts at 7pm and is free to watch from behind the barriers. The Rathaus gates open for ticketholders at 9:30pm. The indoor programme begins at 10pm with the official opening ceremony, fashion show, and first dance. The ball floor opens for general dancing by midnight. Vienna's U-Bahn runs all night on Fridays and Saturdays (24-hour service on these nights), making transport straightforward.

Day After

Vienna coffee house recovery circuit

The day after the Life Ball is an unofficial fixture in Vienna's cultural calendar. The Naschmarkt on Linke Wienzeile (U4 to Kettenbrückengasse) opens at 6am and is the city's main food market: its street food stalls are the standard post-ball breakfast destination. The surrounding Wieden neighbourhood coffee houses (Café Schwarzenberg, Café Landtmann near the Rathaus) open from 7am and welcome guests in costumes without comment, which is very Vienna.

Practical Tips

The Red Carpet is the free version and it is worth attending
The public Red Carpet procession on Rathausplatz runs 7–10pm and is free, with no ticket or registration required. Spectator barriers open from 5:30pm. Arriving at 6pm gives a position within 15 metres of the carpet. The procession features individual guests, public figures, and fashion house delegations in full costume: the quality of spectacle is significant even without an indoor ticket.
Indoor tickets sell out in January
Life Ball indoor tickets go on sale in early January at lifeball.org. The standard entry tier (€130–230) sells out within days of release. VIP packages (€400+) remain available longer. There is no legitimate day-of-sale. Buying from secondary market sites at premium is the only remaining option after the official sale closes.
Vienna's U-Bahn runs 24 hours on Fridays and Saturdays
Vienna's U-Bahn operates around the clock on Friday and Saturday nights, including the night of the Life Ball. Line U2 to Rathaus station is the direct connection to Rathausplatz. A single ticket costs €2.40; a 24-hour pass costs €8. Night trams (N-lines) supplement coverage across the city.
Costume logistics: rent rather than buy
Vienna has a well-established theatre costume rental industry. Ludwig Reiter, Liska, and several studios in the 7th district (Neubau) around Burggasse offer full AIDSwear costumes from €60–200 per night hire. Book six weeks ahead for the Life Ball period. Renting eliminates the need to transport elaborate costumes on flights.
Vienna hostel beds book out in April
Hostels in Neubau (7th district, around Mariahilfer Strasse) and Naschmarkt (6th district) are the closest to the Rathaus and within U-Bahn range. Wombat's City Hostel Vienna and Hostel Ruthensteiner on Robert-Hamerling-Gasse are the main budget options. Both sell out for Life Ball weekend by mid-April.
The Naschmarkt is the post-ball institution
Vienna's Naschmarkt runs along Linke Wienzeile from Kettenbrückengasse to Karlsplatz. It opens at 6am Tuesday through Saturday. The hot food stalls in the centre of the market (Turkish, Greek, and Austrian sections) are the standard breakfast destination after the Life Ball. U4 to Kettenbrückengasse is four stops from Rathaus on the U2/U4 interchange at Karlsplatz.
