What Is Tamarindo Surf and Beach Party Season?

Tamarindo is a 4km beach on Costa Rica's Guanacaste Pacific coast, 330km from San José and accessible in 4.5-5 hours by bus or 45 minutes by flight from San José's Juan Santamaría Airport. The town has developed in layers from its fishing village origins: the northern end near Playa Langosta has the quieter bars and beach clubs; the central beach area has the main surf breaks (beginners at the southern end, more experienced at the river mouth break); the Tamarindo main strip runs parallel to the beach road with restaurants, surf shops, and the bar circuit.

Nogui's and Sharky's are the two anchor bar venues that have operated since the early backpacker phase of the 1990s: both are open-air, on or near the main road, and run live music or DJs on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. The newer beach club options (Pangas, Witch's Rock Surf Camp's bar) cater to the higher-spending surf camp crowd. Craft beer is available at Volcano Brewing and Witch's Rock Surf Camp's bar: a pint costs USD 5-8. The standard cerveza (Imperial or Pilsen) costs USD 2.50-4. A full night out in Tamarindo costs USD 40-70.

Getting There

What to Expect

Day-by-day breakdown

Afternoon

Surf and beach

The southern end of Tamarindo beach, near the estuary, is the best beginner surf zone: consistent beach break, gentle slope. Surf lessons at any of the main schools (Witch's Rock, Blue Treetop) cost USD 50-80 for a 2-hour group session with board. Board hire alone is USD 20-30 per day. The beach in front of the main road is busy from 7am to 6pm; the northern section toward Langosta is quieter.

Evening

Main strip bar circuit

The bar circuit runs from Nogui's at the southern end to Sharky's in the centre and the Witch's Rock Surf Camp bar slightly north. Sharky's runs live music on Thursdays from around 9pm; Nogui's has a more relaxed terrace crowd from sunset. The street food options on the main road (tacos USD 2-4, ceviche USD 6-10 from the beachfront stands) are worth eating before the bars fill. Bars run until 2am on most nights; Sharky's on weekends to 3am.

Practical Tips

Bus from San José takes 4.5-5 hours and costs USD 8-12
Empresas Alfaro runs direct buses from San José's Coca-Cola Terminal to Tamarindo at 7.30am and 3.30pm daily. Journey: 4.5-5 hours. Cost: USD 8-12. Return buses depart from the town centre at 5.45am and 3.45pm. Book 1 day ahead in peak season.
Tamarindo is expensive by Costa Rica standards
A dorm bed costs USD 18-30 per night. A plate of gallo pinto at a local soda (restaurant) costs USD 5-9. A beer at a bar: USD 2.50-4. Surf camp packages (accommodation, lessons, board hire, meals): USD 80-150 per night all-in. Tamarindo is the most expensive beach town in Guanacaste.
Stay near the beach road for the best access
Hostels and surf camps along the main beach road are within 2-5 minutes of both the beach and the bar strip. Pura Vida Hostel and Witch's Rock Surf Camp are the most social options. Book 2-3 weeks ahead for December-February.
December-April is peak: Book accommodation in November
The dry season brings the largest crowd and the most consistent weather. Christmas and New Year week is fully booked at most hostels by October. January and February are the most popular months for surf camp packages: book in November for the best availability.
Shuttle services connect Tamarindo to other Costa Rica destinations
Shuttle services (Interbus, Grayline) run between Tamarindo and San José, La Fortuna (Arenal), Monteverde, and Manuel Antonio. Cost: USD 35-60 per person. Journey to Arenal: approximately 4.5 hours. These are door-to-door minivan services and are significantly more comfortable than public buses.
Playa Langosta and Playa Grande are 15 minutes away
Playa Langosta (north of the estuary, 15 minutes on foot along the beach at low tide) is quieter and has two of Tamarindo's better beach bars. Playa Grande (across the estuary by boat, USD 2-3, 5 minutes) is a leatherback sea turtle nesting beach and one of the best surf spots in Guanacaste.
