North Macedonia's capital has a compact old bazaar bar circuit and a riverside club strip that runs from June to September, with the lowest drink prices in the Balkans.
Year-round. Outdoor riverside clubs operate June to September only.
Skopje divides sharply along the Vardar River: the old bazaar (Čaršija) on the north bank is Ottoman in character, with the 500-year-old Bit Pazar market, several mosques, and the Kale Fortress rising above. The south bank is dominated by the Skopje 2014 urban development project — a series of neoclassical statues, triumphal arches, and government buildings installed from 2010 to 2014 that represents either ambitious city branding or architectural confusion depending on your position. Either way, the Stone Bridge connecting the two banks and the riverside itself are the social axis.
The bar and club circuit runs on both sides. The Čaršija area has traditional kafanas (Balkan tavern-style restaurants with live folk music) and more modern cocktail bars in the alleys around Bit Pazar. The south bank has the Kej (the riverside promenade) with outdoor bar and club structures from June to September: Colosseum, Rolling Stone, and Club Torpedo among them. Drinks are cheap even by Balkan standards: a Skopsko beer costs MKD 80-120 (£1.05-1.60) in a bar; a cocktail is MKD 150-250 (£2-3.30). A full meal at a traditional Macedonian restaurant (tavče gravče, grilled meats, shopska salad) costs MKD 400-800 (£5.30-10.60).

Day-by-day breakdown
The old bazaar lanes around Čifte Amam (the old bathhouse) have bars from 6pm. Kafana Pelister is a traditional Macedonian tavern with live folk music from Thursday to Saturday: a beer and a serving of Macedonian meze costs MKD 300-600 (£4-8). Walk south across the Stone Bridge to the riverside and the Kej promenade. The outdoor bars along the Kej open from 7pm in summer and are the most atmospheric part of a Skopje evening.
The Kej riverside clubs open at 10pm-midnight and run until 4-5am on Friday and Saturday. Colosseum and Rolling Stone are the most established. Entry is free to MKD 200 (£2.65). Music ranges from Balkan pop and turbo-folk (popular regionally) to commercial house and R&B. Drinks at clubs: Skopsko beer MKD 100-150 (£1.30-2), cocktails MKD 200-300 (£2.65-4).
