What Is Sihanoukville Beach Party Scene?

Sihanoukville changed significantly between 2016 and 2019, when a wave of Chinese investment transformed the city centre into a construction zone of casinos and high-rise hotels. The backpacker scene that made it famous largely relocated to Otres Beach, a quieter stretch of coastline about 3km south of the main town. Otres 1 and Otres 2 are the two sections: Otres 1 has the most bars and bungalow guesthouses; Otres 2 is calmer and has better-quality accommodation. Both have beach bar scenes that run from midday through midnight.

Serendipity Beach, the original backpacker base closer to the pier, still has a handful of independent bars and guesthouses that survived the transition, though the area is patchier than it was pre-2019. The islands off Sihanoukville — Koh Rong and Koh Rong Sanloem — have their own party scenes, particularly at Koh Tuch on Koh Rong, where beach bars run until the early hours most nights. Ferries from the pier take 45 minutes to Koh Rong and cost $8–$12 return.

Getting There

What to Expect

Day-by-day breakdown

Afternoon to Sunset

Otres Beach bar setup and sunset drinks

Otres 1 beach bars set out their chairs from midday. Mushroom Point and the various unnamed beach bars along the Otres 1 strip serve cocktails from $2.50 and beers from $1.50. Sunset from Otres Beach is directly over the Gulf of Thailand: reliably good from about 5:30pm. The beach crowd consolidates into the bar area as the light goes and the music volume rises.

Evening and Late Night

Otres bars and bonfire nights

Several Otres 1 bars run bonfire nights and themed events on different weeknights, advertised on handwritten signs along the beach. The parties are informal and mostly free entry. Connecting with other travellers at these is easy: the crowd is small, international, and mostly staying within 500 metres. Last food options are at the beach restaurants until about 11pm; after that, it is drinks only.

Practical Tips

Take a tuk-tuk or moto from the bus station to Otres
Sihanoukville's bus station and main pier are in the town centre, about 3km from Otres Beach. Tuk-tuks charge $4–$6 for the trip; motos (motorbike taxis) are $2–$3. Most bus services from Phnom Penh and Kampot arrive at the main station. Ask your hostel to arrange a pickup if you are arriving late.
Day trip to Koh Rong for the beach club version
Koh Rong's Koh Tuch village has the most developed party beach on any of the Cambodian islands. Ferries from the pier cost $8–$12 return and take 45 minutes. The last ferry back is typically 5pm, so plan to stay overnight if you want to do the late-night beach bar scene properly.
Otres 1 has the most social guesthouses
Bungalow guesthouses on Otres 1 cost $8–$20 per night for a private room with fan; dorm beds at the small hostels on the strip are $5–$8. Most guesthouses are within 50 metres of the beach. Book ahead for December and January, when Otres runs at near-capacity.
The city centre is not the same as Otres Beach
Sihanoukville's city centre near Victory Beach and the casino zone feels chaotic and is not the right base. If your bus drops you in town, take a tuk-tuk to Otres immediately rather than trying to find accommodation in the centre. The two areas have a completely different character.
Visit between November and May for dry-season conditions
The wet season from June to October brings heavy daily rain, rough seas, and limited ferry services to the islands. Most beach bars reduce hours or close entirely. The dry season from November to May is the window for this destination. January and February are peak.
Cash in dollars; ATMs are limited at Otres
There are no ATMs on Otres Beach itself. Withdraw cash at the town centre ATMs before heading out to the beach zone. Carry enough for two to three days. Beer is $1.50–$2.50, cocktails $2.50–$4, meals at beach restaurants $4–$7.
