Shanghai Club Nights

The Bund's rooftop bars and the clubs of Julu Road and Yongkang Street make Shanghai one of Asia's most sustained late-night cities: last call rarely comes before 5am.

What Is Shanghai Club Nights?

Shanghai's nightlife runs on multiple registers simultaneously. The Bund's rooftop bars overlook the Huangpu River and Pudong's lit skyline, charging ¥80–¥150 per cocktail for the view. A few kilometres west, Julu Road and Xintiandi's bar streets run cheaper, louder, and later. The French Concession neighbourhood, centred on Yongkang Street, is where the city's alternative and underground crowd concentrates: smaller bars, lower prices, and music that doesn't default to EDM and bottle service. Club Arkham and Elevator are the two most reliable venues for electronic music; both book international DJs on weekends and run until 6am on peak nights.

The metro runs until around 11pm, which means most people arrive by cab or DiDi from 11pm onwards. DiDi is China's equivalent of Uber: download the app before you arrive and link a payment method; fares are cheap and the service is reliable at 2am. Hostels in the French Concession and around Jing'an are the best base for nightlife access. Dorm beds start at around ¥80–¥150 per night (approximately £9–£17), which makes Shanghai the most affordable major city in East Asia for budget travellers.

Getting There

What to Expect

Day-by-day breakdown

Evening

French Concession bars and Yongkang Street

Yongkang Street is a narrow lane in the French Concession lined with small bars, most with outdoor seating spilling onto the pavement. Beer is ¥25–¥40 at most venues. The street runs from around 7pm to 2am and is the social centre for Shanghai's young expat and Chinese creative community. Dr. Wine on Fumin Road and Shelter in a former air raid shelter on Yongfu Road are longer-running fixtures worth knowing.

Late Night

Club Arkham, Elevator, and after-hours

Club Arkham on Sichuan Bei Road opens from midnight and books techno, house, and drum and bass acts until 6am. Entry is ¥80–¥150 depending on the night. Elevator, on Jiashan Road in the French Concession, runs a similar model: two floors, international and local DJs, open until 5am or 6am. Both venues are cashless inside; top up your wristband at the entrance. DiDi back to your hostel after 5am will cost ¥30–¥60 depending on distance.

Practical Tips

Download DiDi before you arrive
DiDi is the essential transport app in Shanghai. The metro closes at 11pm, so late nights require it. Link a credit card via the international version of the app from outside China. Fares across the city centre are ¥25–¥60. Having cash as a backup is advisable; some older drivers do not accept card.
A VPN is necessary before you enter China
Google, WhatsApp, Instagram, and most Western social platforms are blocked in mainland China. Download and activate a VPN on your phone before crossing the border. Set it up in Hong Kong or your departure city; you cannot download most VPNs once you are on a Chinese network.
WeChat Pay and Alipay are essential
Many Shanghai bars, restaurants, and clubs do not accept foreign credit cards or cash readily. WeChat Pay and Alipay are the standard payment methods. International visitors can now link foreign cards to Alipay's tourist version. Set this up on arrival at Pudong Airport before leaving the terminal.
French Concession bars are cheap by major-city standards
Yongkang Street and the side lanes off Wulumuqi Road have bars charging ¥25–¥45 for a beer. That is £3–£5. The Bund rooftop bars run four to five times that. Choose the French Concession as your base and save the Bund for one occasion when the view earns the markup.
Chinese New Year empties the city for two weeks
Chinese New Year falls in January or February. Shanghai empties significantly as migrant workers return to their home provinces. Many restaurants, bars, and smaller clubs close for up to two weeks. If you are visiting in late January or February, check venue schedules in advance.
Stay in the French Concession or Jing'an for nightlife access
The French Concession puts you within walking distance of Yongkang Street and a short DiDi ride from Club Arkham and Elevator. Jing'an is slightly more central with good metro access. Both areas have hostels with dorm beds at ¥80–¥150 per night. The Bund area is scenic but inconvenient for the actual nightlife.
