The Bund's rooftop bars and the clubs of Julu Road and Yongkang Street make Shanghai one of Asia's most sustained late-night cities: last call rarely comes before 5am.
Shanghai's nightlife runs on multiple registers simultaneously. The Bund's rooftop bars overlook the Huangpu River and Pudong's lit skyline, charging ¥80–¥150 per cocktail for the view. A few kilometres west, Julu Road and Xintiandi's bar streets run cheaper, louder, and later. The French Concession neighbourhood, centred on Yongkang Street, is where the city's alternative and underground crowd concentrates: smaller bars, lower prices, and music that doesn't default to EDM and bottle service. Club Arkham and Elevator are the two most reliable venues for electronic music; both book international DJs on weekends and run until 6am on peak nights.
The metro runs until around 11pm, which means most people arrive by cab or DiDi from 11pm onwards. DiDi is China's equivalent of Uber: download the app before you arrive and link a payment method; fares are cheap and the service is reliable at 2am. Hostels in the French Concession and around Jing'an are the best base for nightlife access. Dorm beds start at around ¥80–¥150 per night (approximately £9–£17), which makes Shanghai the most affordable major city in East Asia for budget travellers.

Day-by-day breakdown
Yongkang Street is a narrow lane in the French Concession lined with small bars, most with outdoor seating spilling onto the pavement. Beer is ¥25–¥40 at most venues. The street runs from around 7pm to 2am and is the social centre for Shanghai's young expat and Chinese creative community. Dr. Wine on Fumin Road and Shelter in a former air raid shelter on Yongfu Road are longer-running fixtures worth knowing.
Club Arkham on Sichuan Bei Road opens from midnight and books techno, house, and drum and bass acts until 6am. Entry is ¥80–¥150 depending on the night. Elevator, on Jiashan Road in the French Concession, runs a similar model: two floors, international and local DJs, open until 5am or 6am. Both venues are cashless inside; top up your wristband at the entrance. DiDi back to your hostel after 5am will cost ¥30–¥60 depending on distance.
