Every Sunday, San Juan del Sur's pool-crawl circuit runs four hostels from noon to midnight, passing 800-1,200 backpackers through the same pools and bars on the Nicaraguan Pacific coast.
Weekly. Larger during high season (November to April) and peak Semana Santa (Holy Week, March-April).
Sunday Funday in San Juan del Sur is a weekly pool crawl that has been running since the mid-2000s. Tickets cost USD 30-45 and include a wristband giving entry to four participating hostels (typically Naked Tiger, Gypsy's, Brown Sugar, and Base Camp), bus transport between them, and a drink voucher at each stop. The event runs from noon to midnight and moves through the participating hostels on a rolling basis: each hostel has 2-3 hours as the main venue before the group transfers. The Nicaraguan Pacific coast setting means warm sun, cold beer, and a poolside that is genuinely tropical.
San Juan del Sur is a small fishing town (population approximately 15,000) on Nicaragua's southern Pacific coast, 130km south of Managua and 35km from the Costa Rica border. The bay is calm for swimming; the surf beaches are 15-30 minutes north or south by taxi. The Sunday Funday circuit is the reason most backpackers stop here. Semana Santa (Holy Week, usually March or April) is the peak: the pool crawl during this week draws 2,000+ participants and is the single biggest party event on the Central America backpacker circuit. Outside Semana Santa, Sunday Funday runs weekly and is the primary social infrastructure of the town.

Day-by-day breakdown
Wristbands sell from most hostels the day before and on Sunday morning. During Semana Santa, buy by Saturday: they sell out. At USD 30-45 they are among the more expensive events on the Central America circuit, but the included drinks and transport make the value reasonable. Register at Naked Tiger Hostel or check with your accommodation for the current ticket seller.
The circuit rotates through participating hostels across the day. Each hostel runs its pool, bar, music, and occasional games (limbo, beer pong, diving competitions) during its slot. Transport between hostels is by party bus (covered truck with music). Drink vouchers are redeemable at each stop. The first stop tends to be the most relaxed; by stop three the crowd is in full swing. The final stop runs until midnight. After the crawl, the bar strip along the beach road continues until 2am.
