Golden Gate Park hosts 80,000 people for three days in August for the Outside Lands festival; the Mission District and Haight-Ashbury run a parallel bar circuit year-round.
Annual, first weekend of August. Tickets go on sale in March.
Outside Lands Music and Arts Festival has run in Golden Gate Park every August since 2008. The 2025 edition headlined Post Malone, Gracie Abrams, and Glass Animals across six stages. The festival is known for its food and wine programme alongside the music: over 80 local restaurants and 30 Bay Area wineries have vendor stalls. Tickets sell quickly and cost USD 149-165 for a day pass or USD 395-475 for a 3-day pass. Golden Gate Park spans 4km from the Panhandle to Ocean Beach; the festival uses the eastern sections near JFK Drive and Lindley Meadow.
San Francisco's neighbourhood bar scene operates year-round independent of Outside Lands. The Mission District (24th Street and Valencia Street) is the most consistently social neighbourhood for backpackers: Latin bars, dive bars, and music venues within a 4-block radius. Haight-Ashbury (the original 1960s counterculture district, 2km from Golden Gate Park) has a concentration of bars and record shops on Haight Street. The Castro has its own circuit. San Francisco is expensive: a beer in a bar costs USD 8-12, a cocktail USD 14-18. The mission's cheaper bars and the many beer-only spots in the Tenderloin offer more affordable drinking.

Day-by-day breakdown
The main gates open at noon. The Lands End Stage is the largest (capacity 40,000+). Check the full lineup at sfoutsidelands.com when announced in spring. The Beer Lands and Cheese Lands programmes have dedicated tasting areas included in the general admission ticket. Bring a jacket: San Francisco in August averages 18°C with frequent fog. The park is 2.5km from the Haight-Ashbury MUNI stops.
Valencia Street between 16th and 24th Streets has San Francisco's best bar concentration for backpackers. Zeitgeist on Valencia at Duboce is a classic dive bar with an outdoor beer garden (beer USD 6-8). The Elbo Room on Valencia Street has live music from 9pm most nights. 20 Mission and Lexington Club are in the same corridor. BART 16th Street Mission station puts you in the middle of the circuit.
