What Is San Francisco Outside Lands and Bar Circuit?

Outside Lands Music and Arts Festival has run in Golden Gate Park every August since 2008. The 2025 edition headlined Post Malone, Gracie Abrams, and Glass Animals across six stages. The festival is known for its food and wine programme alongside the music: over 80 local restaurants and 30 Bay Area wineries have vendor stalls. Tickets sell quickly and cost USD 149-165 for a day pass or USD 395-475 for a 3-day pass. Golden Gate Park spans 4km from the Panhandle to Ocean Beach; the festival uses the eastern sections near JFK Drive and Lindley Meadow.

San Francisco's neighbourhood bar scene operates year-round independent of Outside Lands. The Mission District (24th Street and Valencia Street) is the most consistently social neighbourhood for backpackers: Latin bars, dive bars, and music venues within a 4-block radius. Haight-Ashbury (the original 1960s counterculture district, 2km from Golden Gate Park) has a concentration of bars and record shops on Haight Street. The Castro has its own circuit. San Francisco is expensive: a beer in a bar costs USD 8-12, a cocktail USD 14-18. The mission's cheaper bars and the many beer-only spots in the Tenderloin offer more affordable drinking.

Mission District bar circuit

Valencia Street between 16th and 24th Streets has San Francisco's best bar concentration for backpackers. Zeitgeist on Valencia at Duboce is a classic dive bar with an outdoor beer garden (beer USD 6-8). The Elbo Room on Valencia Street has live music from 9pm most nights. 20 Mission and Lexington Club are in the same corridor. BART 16th Street Mission station puts you in the middle of the circuit.

Practical Tips

BART from SFO Airport to the city centre takes 30 minutes
BART runs directly from San Francisco International Airport to the city centre. Embarcadero, Powell, and 16th Street Mission stations are the most useful. Journey time from SFO: 30-35 minutes. Cost: USD 10.35 from SFO to Powell Street. Runs 05:00 to midnight weekdays, later on weekends.
San Francisco is one of the most expensive US cities
A dorm bed at a downtown hostel costs USD 55-90 per night. A burrito at a Mission taqueria costs USD 10-14. A craft beer at a bar costs USD 8-12. Budget USD 120-180 per day excluding Outside Lands tickets.
Outside Lands tickets sell out in April: buy as soon as they go on sale
3-day passes go on sale in March and sell out within days. Day tickets release closer to the event but also sell out. Buy immediately at sfoutsidelands.com when the sale opens. Third-party resale adds 30-50% to the face value.
Mission District or SoMa hostels are the best base
The HI San Francisco Downtown hostel and several independent options in SoMa and the Mission offer dorm beds at USD 55-90. Outside Lands week adds 20-30% to prices; book 4-6 weeks ahead. The Haight-Ashbury area (walking distance to the festival) has limited hostel options but is worth searching.
MUNI N-Judah line serves the festival entrance
The MUNI N-Judah streetcar runs from downtown through the Inner Sunset to the festival entrance at 9th Avenue and Irving. A single MUNI ride costs USD 2.50. During Outside Lands, the N-Judah runs at increased frequency from midday; expect crowding on outbound service 6-8pm.
The Tenderloin neighbourhood requires awareness
San Francisco's Tenderloin (roughly between Civic Center and Union Square) has a high concentration of unsheltered people and open drug use. It is walkable during the day with awareness; less so at night. The adjacent neighborhoods (SoMa, Mission, Hayes Valley) are more comfortable for late-night walking.
