Uruguay's Atlantic resort fills to 400,000 people across the final week of December, with beach clubs, outdoor concerts, and the most concentrated South American party scene outside Buenos Aires.
Annual. The full summer season runs December to February; New Year week is the peak.
Punta del Este sits at the southern tip of Uruguay's Atlantic coast, 140km east of Montevideo on Route 10. The peninsula has two distinct beaches: Playa Mansa (facing the estuary, calm water) and Playa Brava (facing the Atlantic, rougher surf, the location of La Mano — the giant hand sculpture that is the city's defining image). The bar and club strip centres on Avenida Gorlero (the main shopping street) and the blocks either side. Ku, Soho, and Moby Dick are the main clubs. In January and February, these venues run internationally booked DJs from midnight to 8am.
The New Year's Eve countdown on Playa Mansa draws 100,000 people for the midnight fireworks. The full New Year period (26 December to 4 January) is when the city operates at maximum capacity: accommodation prices are at their annual peak and every restaurant, club, and beach club is full. For budget travellers, staying in Maldonado (the adjacent city, 10km north) halves accommodation costs with a 20-minute bus connection. The summer season continues through February at lower intensity: the clubs remain open, the beaches are warm, and prices drop significantly after the second week of January.

Day-by-day breakdown
Casapueblo, the all-white artist's studio-turned-hotel designed by Uruguayan artist Carlos Páez Vilaró, sits 10km west of the city at Punta Ballena. It is worth visiting for the cliff setting and the sunset ceremony: at sunset, a staff member recites a poem while a cannon is fired. The sunset concert series runs from December to March (tickets USD 30-80). The beaches in the city centre — Playa El Emir and Playa de los Ingleses — are the most accessible and most social.
Clubs on and around Avenida Gorlero open at midnight. Ku is the largest venue (capacity 2,000+) and runs international DJ bookings through January. Entry USD 20-50. Soho and Moby Dick are smaller and often cheaper. On New Year's Eve, many people move from the beach fireworks at midnight directly to the clubs: the 1am crowd in the city centre is overwhelming. Taxis queue on Gorlero from 3am; allow 30-45 minutes for a cab in peak weeks.
