What Is Punta del Este New Year Season?

Punta del Este sits at the southern tip of Uruguay's Atlantic coast, 140km east of Montevideo on Route 10. The peninsula has two distinct beaches: Playa Mansa (facing the estuary, calm water) and Playa Brava (facing the Atlantic, rougher surf, the location of La Mano — the giant hand sculpture that is the city's defining image). The bar and club strip centres on Avenida Gorlero (the main shopping street) and the blocks either side. Ku, Soho, and Moby Dick are the main clubs. In January and February, these venues run internationally booked DJs from midnight to 8am.

The New Year's Eve countdown on Playa Mansa draws 100,000 people for the midnight fireworks. The full New Year period (26 December to 4 January) is when the city operates at maximum capacity: accommodation prices are at their annual peak and every restaurant, club, and beach club is full. For budget travellers, staying in Maldonado (the adjacent city, 10km north) halves accommodation costs with a 20-minute bus connection. The summer season continues through February at lower intensity: the clubs remain open, the beaches are warm, and prices drop significantly after the second week of January.

Getting There

What to Expect

Day-by-day breakdown

Afternoon

Beaches and Casapueblo

Casapueblo, the all-white artist's studio-turned-hotel designed by Uruguayan artist Carlos Páez Vilaró, sits 10km west of the city at Punta Ballena. It is worth visiting for the cliff setting and the sunset ceremony: at sunset, a staff member recites a poem while a cannon is fired. The sunset concert series runs from December to March (tickets USD 30-80). The beaches in the city centre — Playa El Emir and Playa de los Ingleses — are the most accessible and most social.

Late night

Gorlero clubs and beach parties

Clubs on and around Avenida Gorlero open at midnight. Ku is the largest venue (capacity 2,000+) and runs international DJ bookings through January. Entry USD 20-50. Soho and Moby Dick are smaller and often cheaper. On New Year's Eve, many people move from the beach fireworks at midnight directly to the clubs: the 1am crowd in the city centre is overwhelming. Taxis queue on Gorlero from 3am; allow 30-45 minutes for a cab in peak weeks.

Practical Tips

Bus from Montevideo takes 2 hours and costs UYU 400-600
Copsa and Turil run frequent services from Montevideo's Tres Cruces terminal to Punta del Este. Journey time is 2-2.5 hours. Cost: UYU 400-600 (£8-13). In peak season, book the return journey before you travel: buses fill on 2 January and 3 January.
Maldonado cuts costs in half
Punta del Este accommodation during New Year week costs USD 80-200 for a private room; there are almost no hostels in the city. Maldonado, 10km north, has hostel dorm beds at USD 20-40 and a 20-minute bus connection. Bus between the two cities costs UYU 30-50.
Punta del Este prices are the highest in Uruguay
A cocktail at a Gorlero bar costs USD 12-18. Club entry is USD 20-50. A restaurant meal is USD 25-45. This is Buenos Aires pricing. Budget USD 100-150 per day for accommodation, food, and one club night.
New Year fireworks are on Playa Mansa at midnight
The midnight fireworks on 31 December are launched from the mole (pier) at the western end of Playa Mansa and are visible from the full length of the beach. Arrive by 10pm to get a position near the water. The beach empties toward the clubs after 1am.
Taxis run on a metered system; agree price for long journeys
City taxis in Punta del Este are metered. For journeys to Casapueblo or La Barra (a further beach town 10km east), agree the price before getting in. La Barra has a separate beach club and bar scene: the drawbridge connecting it to the peninsula creates queues after midnight.
La Barra runs its own scene 10km east of the city
La Barra de Maldonado is a smaller, younger, more bohemian beach town 10km east of Punta del Este across the Maldonado Bridge. It has its own restaurants, galleries, and clubs. Weekday nights at La Barra are quieter and cheaper than Punta del Este's Gorlero strip.
