A village on Costa Rica's Caribbean coast where the bus stops on the beach road and the bars run on reggaeton and Guaro Cacique until 3am: Salsa Brava, Rocking J's, and the most relaxed Caribbean beach party circuit in Central America.
Year-round. Dry season (December to March) is the best for beach events. Carnival de Puerto Viejo runs in February with street parties and parade. Caribbean Carnival (August) in Limón Province includes events in Puerto Viejo.
Puerto Viejo de Talamanca sits on Costa Rica's Caribbean coast, 55km south of Limón on the road toward the Panamanian border. The main road through the village is a single lane with a bar on every other building. The beach road south toward Playa Cocles and Playa Chiquita has the beach bar cluster. The town has maintained a Afro-Caribbean and Bribri indigenous cultural mix that gives the nightlife a different character from Pacific coast Costa Rica: slower, reggae-oriented, and genuinely local rather than tourist-manufactured.
Salsa Brava beach break, immediately in front of the town, is a serious reef break drawing surfers year-round. Rocking J's, a hammock hostel and bar south of the main drag, is the social centre for travellers. Johnny's Place is the main late bar on the beach road with live music and dancing until 3am on weekends. Guaro Cacique (local cane spirit, similar to aguardiente) mixed with pineapple juice costs 1,500–2,500 CRC (approximately £2–£3.50); Imperial or Bavaria beer 1,500–2,000 CRC. A good evening costs about 10,000–15,000 CRC (£14–£21) including food.
Party hostels within reach of Puerto Viejo's main celebrations. Ranked by guest rating.
Day-by-day breakdown
Puerto Viejo's main strip has open-front bars and sodas (local family restaurants) serving Caribbean rice and beans, patacones (fried green plantain), and fresh fish from 6pm. Dinner at a soda: 4,000–8,000 CRC. The bars on the main road — Café Rico and the stretch between the bus stop and the church — are the early evening gathering point. Beer: 1,500–2,000 CRC. The beach road south of town has the same bars but with a better view of the water.
Johnny's Place on the beach road is the main late venue: live music or DJ sets from 9pm, dancing on the outdoor terrace, and a mixed Caribbean and international crowd. It runs until 2am–3am on Fridays and Saturdays. Rocking J's — the hammock hostel 500 metres south — has its own bar and occasional events; it is the gathering point for hostel travellers. Guaro and pineapple: 1,500–2,500 CRC. The walk between venues on the beach road takes 10 minutes.
