What Is Puerto Vallarta Zona Romántica Nightlife?

Puerto Vallarta's Zona Romántica (also called Col. E. Zapata or 'The Romantic Zone') is the neighbourhood south of the Río Cuale: a grid of cobblestone streets between the beach and the hills, with the most concentrated restaurant and bar scene in the city. Lázaro Cárdenas Park is the outdoor gathering point. The area has been the centre of Puerto Vallarta's LGBTQ+ scene for decades, with bars and clubs along Olas Altas beach and the streets connecting it to the park.

The Malecon, the seafront boardwalk running 1km north from the Río Cuale to the main plaza, has late-night bars and open-air venues on the beach side. Sr. Frog's and La Bodeguita del Medio are the most established. Beer on the Malecon: 60–90 MXN; tequila shots: 50–80 MXN; cocktails: 130–180 MXN. The clubs in Zona Romántica — Paco's Ranch and Antropology — run until 4am on weekends. Puerto Vallarta Pride in late May is one of the largest Pride events in Mexico, with beach parties and events across the Zona Romántica for several days.

Getting There

What to Expect

Day-by-day breakdown

Evening

Zona Romántica and Malecon sunset

Start at Lázaro Cárdenas Park in the Zona Romántica at 7pm: outdoor bars on the park perimeter, taco vendors, and the relaxed early-evening atmosphere of the neighbourhood. Walk north along Olas Altas beach to the Malecon. The sunset over Banderas Bay is visible from the entire beachfront: the best unobstructed view is from the beach itself, north of the Río Cuale crossing. Malecon bars are busy from 8pm; La Bodeguita del Medio has live Cuban music from 9pm and sells mojitos at 130–160 MXN.

Late Night

Zona Romántica clubs and late bars

The clubs in Zona Romántica open at 10pm and are worth entering from midnight. Paco's Ranch on Ignacio Vallarta street is the most established venue with drag shows, commercial dance, and a mixed LGBTQ+ and straight crowd. Entry 200–300 MXN including a drink. Antropology is the larger electronic music option a block away. Both run until 4am. The bars on Olas Altas stay open until 2am and are the more relaxed post-dinner option. Tequila at Zona Romántica bars: 50–80 MXN per shot.

Practical Tips

Puerto Vallarta Airport is 20 minutes from the Zona Romántica by taxi
Licenciado Gustavo Díaz Ordaz International Airport (PVR) is 10km north of the Zona Romántica. Authorised taxi from the airport: 350–450 MXN. Uber is significantly cheaper (150–200 MXN) if available at the arrivals area. The journey takes 20–30 minutes without traffic.
Puerto Vallarta Pride (late May) fills the Zona Romántica for a week
Puerto Vallarta Pride runs over 5–7 days in late May with beach parties on Olas Altas, drag shows, and bar events across the Zona Romántica. It is one of the largest Pride celebrations in Mexico. Hotels and hostels fill weeks in advance. Check vallartapride.org for the 2026 dates.
Pay in pesos for consistently better prices than USD
Puerto Vallarta is a major US tourist destination and prices are often quoted in USD. Paying in Mexican pesos from an ATM withdrawal is consistently 10–15% cheaper than paying in USD due to the exchange rate venues apply. Use a low-fee card (Wise, Revolut) for ATM withdrawals.
Local buses (Combi) run up and down the main road for 10 MXN
Combi minibuses run between the Zona Romántica and the north end of the Malecon continuously throughout the day and until around midnight. The fare is 10 MXN anywhere along the route. After midnight, taxis are the reliable option: 80–150 MXN within the tourist zone.
The beach south of Boca de Tomatlán is remote: day trips only
The southern Banderas Bay beaches (Quimixto, Yelapa) are accessible only by water taxi. The water taxis run from Los Muertos pier in the Zona Romántica to 5pm. Do not try to return after dark. These beaches are day-trip destinations; stay in Puerto Vallarta for the nightlife.
Stay in the Zona Romántica for direct access to bars and the beach
Hostels in the Zona Romántica (south of Río Cuale) put you within 5 minutes walk of every bar on the Olas Altas strip. Dorm beds: 250–450 MXN per night. The Centro (north of the river) is equally convenient for the Malecon and marginally cheaper. Book ahead for November to April and Pride week.
