The Zona Romántica's Lázaro Cárdenas Park is where the evening starts: LGBTQ+-friendly bars from 8pm, rooftop tequila bars above Olas Altas beach, and a Malecon seafront promenade that runs to midnight and beyond.
Year-round. Dry season (November to April) is the busiest tourist period. Pride (May) is a significant annual event. Summer (June to September) is hot, humid, and quieter.
Puerto Vallarta's Zona Romántica (also called Col. E. Zapata or 'The Romantic Zone') is the neighbourhood south of the Río Cuale: a grid of cobblestone streets between the beach and the hills, with the most concentrated restaurant and bar scene in the city. Lázaro Cárdenas Park is the outdoor gathering point. The area has been the centre of Puerto Vallarta's LGBTQ+ scene for decades, with bars and clubs along Olas Altas beach and the streets connecting it to the park.
The Malecon, the seafront boardwalk running 1km north from the Río Cuale to the main plaza, has late-night bars and open-air venues on the beach side. Sr. Frog's and La Bodeguita del Medio are the most established. Beer on the Malecon: 60–90 MXN; tequila shots: 50–80 MXN; cocktails: 130–180 MXN. The clubs in Zona Romántica — Paco's Ranch and Antropology — run until 4am on weekends. Puerto Vallarta Pride in late May is one of the largest Pride events in Mexico, with beach parties and events across the Zona Romántica for several days.

Day-by-day breakdown
Start at Lázaro Cárdenas Park in the Zona Romántica at 7pm: outdoor bars on the park perimeter, taco vendors, and the relaxed early-evening atmosphere of the neighbourhood. Walk north along Olas Altas beach to the Malecon. The sunset over Banderas Bay is visible from the entire beachfront: the best unobstructed view is from the beach itself, north of the Río Cuale crossing. Malecon bars are busy from 8pm; La Bodeguita del Medio has live Cuban music from 9pm and sells mojitos at 130–160 MXN.
The clubs in Zona Romántica open at 10pm and are worth entering from midnight. Paco's Ranch on Ignacio Vallarta street is the most established venue with drag shows, commercial dance, and a mixed LGBTQ+ and straight crowd. Entry 200–300 MXN including a drink. Antropology is the larger electronic music option a block away. Both run until 4am. The bars on Olas Altas stay open until 2am and are the more relaxed post-dinner option. Tequila at Zona Romántica bars: 50–80 MXN per shot.
