What Is Prague Beer Festival?

The Prague Beer Festival at Holešovice Market brings together over 50 independent Czech and international breweries for a concentrated weekend of tasting and live music. Unlike the tourist-oriented beer halls in the old town, this event draws a predominantly local crowd alongside serious beer enthusiasts from across Europe. The Holešovice Market space fits several thousand people comfortably, with long communal tables, outdoor sections, and brewery stands arranged around a central stage. Attendance typically reaches 5,000 across the two days. The festival has run in various forms since the mid-2000s and has shifted progressively toward craft and microbrewery representation rather than the mainstream lager brands that dominated early editions.

Entry requires a token system: you buy a festival cup on arrival for around 50 CZK and exchange beer tokens (typically 40–60 CZK each) for pours at individual brewery stands. Most breweries offer tasting samples as well as full pours. The range covers Czech pilsners, unfiltered lagers, dark lagers, IPAs, wheat beers, and seasonal specials not available in standard bars. Live music runs across the weekend on the main stage, covering folk, jazz, and roots genres, with the volume kept at a level that still allows conversation. The festival opens at noon both days and closes around 10pm. Getting there is straightforward: tram lines 1, 3, and 25 stop at Holešovice Market, roughly 20 minutes from the old town.

Getting There

What to Expect

Day-by-day breakdown

Afternoon

Brewery tasting circuit

Arrive at noon when queues are short and the brewery stands are freshly stocked. Buy a full token sheet on entry rather than topping up repeatedly. The stands are loosely grouped by region: Bohemian breweries on the east side of the hall, Moravian and international on the west. Most breweries post tasting notes in English as well as Czech. Aim to work through eight to ten different beers in the afternoon session before the evening crowd arrives.

Evening

Live music and late pours

The main stage programme runs from around 5pm. Crowds peak between 6pm and 9pm on Saturday. The communal tables fill quickly in the evening, so finding a seat means arriving before 5pm or joining a group. Brewery stands often release limited specials in the evening session, announced on boards at each stand. The festival closes at 10pm; most visitors continue to Holešovice's bar district on Komunardů street, a five-minute walk from the market.
