What Is Panama City Casco Viejo Nightlife?

Casco Viejo is a 17th-century colonial neighbourhood on a peninsula at the southern end of Panama City, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997 and now home to the most concentrated nightlife in the country. Plaza Bolívar and Plaza Herrera are the outdoor anchor points, with rooftop bars on the surrounding colonial buildings offering views over the Bay of Panama to the Pacific. The main hostel cluster is also in Casco Viejo, putting travellers within walking distance of everything.

The nightlife is split between the polished rooftop bars targeting the international and expat crowd — Tantalo Rooftop on Calle 8 Oeste, Ego y Narciso on Avenida A — and the local scene further into the neighbourhood. Salsa and reggaeton dominate the music, with some clubs running bachata nights on Thursdays. Beer prices in Casco Viejo bars run $3–$5 for a Balboa or Atlas; cocktails $8–$14. The Miraflores Locks at the Panama Canal are a 15-minute taxi ride from Casco Viejo and worth a visit before the nightlife starts.

Getting There

What to Expect

Day-by-day breakdown

Evening

Canal visit and Casco Viejo plaza circuit

Miraflores Locks Visitor Centre at the Panama Canal is open until 10pm and costs $20 entry. The evening slot is worth it: ships pass with floodlights on. Back in Casco Viejo by 8pm, start at Plaza Bolívar or Plaza Herrera for outdoor drinks. The bars on Avenida Central and Avenida A serve Balboa and Atlas beer at $3–$5. Tantalo Rooftop on Calle 8 Oeste opens at 6pm and has the best sunset views. Minimum spend policy on weekends: $15–$20.

Late Night

Salsa clubs and Casco after midnight

Salsa clubs in Casco Viejo start filling around 11pm and run until 3am or 4am. Platea on Calle Uruguay (a 15-minute taxi ride from Casco Viejo in the Marbella district) is the most established salsa venue with live bands on Fridays. Ego y Narciso in Casco itself is the local late option. Reggaeton clubs on Vía Argentina, 20 minutes by taxi, run until 5am at weekends. Beer at clubs: $4–$6. Taxis from Casco Viejo to other districts cost $3–$8 and are broadly safe.

Practical Tips

Stay in Casco Viejo and take taxis to other districts at night
Casco Viejo is safe for tourists and well-patrolled at night. The districts immediately adjacent to it — particularly El Chorrillo — have a worse safety record. Stick to taxis after dark when travelling outside Casco Viejo. Agree the price before getting in; most short journeys are $3–$8.
Panama uses USD: no currency exchange needed
Panama's official currency is the US dollar (alongside the Balboa, which is 1:1 with the dollar and rarely seen in practice). No currency exchange on arrival. ATMs dispense dollars. Budget $50–$80 for a full night out including food, drinks, and taxis.
Panama Carnival (4 days before Ash Wednesday) shuts the city down
Panama City's Carnival is one of Central America's largest, with foam parties on the Cinta Costera waterfront and four days of street parties. Hotels and hostels fill weeks in advance. February or early March depending on the year — check the 2026 date and book accommodation early.
Metro Line 1 connects Casco Viejo to the city centre for $0.35
Panama City's metro runs from 5am to midnight on weekdays and to 10pm on Sundays. The fare is $0.35. Casco Viejo does not have a direct metro stop, but the 5 de Mayo and Albrook stations are a short taxi ride away ($3–$5). The metro is the cheapest way to reach the airport.
Direct flights to South America and North America make Panama a major connection point
Panama City (Tocumen International Airport) is one of the main Latin American aviation hubs. Copa Airlines operates direct flights to over 80 destinations from here. Many travellers use Panama City as a 2–3 day stopover on longer trips. The airport is 45 minutes from Casco Viejo by taxi ($25–$35).
Hostels in Casco Viejo are more expensive than elsewhere in the city
The UNESCO status and tourist infrastructure mean Casco Viejo hostels charge a premium. Dorm beds run $15–$25 per night. For cheaper options, hostels in El Cangrejo or Marbella are $10–$18 per dorm, with a 15-minute taxi ride to the action.
