Switzerland's biggest open-air music festival sits on the shores of Lake Geneva: 230,000 attendees, world-class headliners, and Swiss precision in festival organisation.
Annual. Late July.
Paleo is Switzerland's largest open-air music festival and one of the biggest in Europe, drawing 230,000 people over six days to the Asse plain outside Nyon, a small town on the shores of Lake Geneva. Six stages host a mix of international headliners, Francophone acts, world music, and emerging artists. Past headliners include Muse, Stromae, The Cure, and Kendrick Lamar.
The festival's reputation rests on two things: musical diversity and Swiss-level organisation. Where other festivals of this scale descend into mud and chaos, Paleo runs with precision. The site is flat and well-drained. The food village (Le Village du Monde) offers cuisine from 30+ countries. The toilets are clean. This sounds mundane but anyone who has been to a British festival will appreciate the difference.
Nyon is 25 minutes by train from Geneva and sits directly on the lake. The combination of a major music festival with a small-town lakeside setting is unusual and appealing. Swimming in Lake Geneva between festival sessions is a genuine option: the public beach is 15 minutes' walk from the festival site.
Switzerland is expensive. This is the unavoidable caveat. Beer at the festival costs CHF 7 to 9 (GBP 6 to 8). Food starts at CHF 12. Hostels in Geneva start at GBP 30. Budget-conscious backpackers can camp at the festival (CHF 30 for the week) and cook at the campsite to reduce costs. The music and setting justify the premium.
