What Is Pai Night Bazaar and Full Moon Party?

Pai sits 770 metres above sea level in the Mae Hong Son valley, 135km north of Chiang Mai on a road with 762 curves. The town's main street, Chaisongkhram Road, doubles as the night bazaar every evening from around 6pm: 500 metres of food stalls, craft sellers, and bar fronts. It is small enough to walk twice in 20 minutes and that is the appeal. The bar scene is built around a handful of reggae and acoustic live music venues between Chaisongkhram Road and the riverside.

Pai's full moon party takes place on the Pai River field or rotating outdoor venues depending on the month. It is nothing like Koh Phangan: a few hundred people, fire performers, a sound system, and bars selling buckets and Chang beer. The atmosphere is informal. Most people come from the surrounding guesthouses and hostels. Beer from 7-Eleven costs 45–55 THB; buckets at bars run 150–200 THB. The night bazaar closes around 11pm but bars on Chaisongkhram and the riverside stay open until 1am or 2am most nights.

Getting There

What to Expect

Day-by-day breakdown

Evening

Night Bazaar and riverside bars

The night bazaar opens around 6pm and peaks from 7pm to 9pm. Khao soi (curry noodles) from stalls costs 60–80 THB and is better here than most Chiang Mai restaurants. The bar section of Chaisongkhram has live acoustic music at several venues from 8pm: Edible Jazz and the bars on the small soi (side street) opposite the 7-Eleven are the consistent options. Beer 50–70 THB. Buckets 150–200 THB. The riverside bars, a five-minute walk south, are quieter and better for conversation.

Late Night

Full Moon gathering (monthly) or late bars

On full moon nights, the gathering shifts to a riverside field or outdoor venue. Fire performers, a sound system, and 300–800 people depending on the season. It runs midnight to 3am. On non-full-moon nights, the late scene is limited: a few bars on Chaisongkhram stay open to 1am or 2am, primarily Bebop Bar and Don't Cry Bar. Pai does not have clubs. The draw is the informality and the fact that on a clear night you can see stars from the dancefloor.

Practical Tips

The road from Chiang Mai has 762 curves: take the minivan
Local green bus from Chiang Mai Arcade Bus Terminal takes 3–4 hours and costs 80–100 THB. Minivans from Pratu Chiang Mai take 2.5–3 hours and cost 150 THB. Both involve the winding mountain road. If you are prone to motion sickness, sit at the front and take medication before departure.
Book accommodation for full moon nights at least two weeks ahead
Pai has limited accommodation. During peak season (November to February) and around full moon nights, guesthouses and hostels fill quickly. Bamboo hut guesthouses on the river start at 200 THB per night; hostel dorms from 150 THB. Book directly via the hostel website or a booking partner.
7-Eleven beer is the budget drink of choice
Chang beer at 7-Eleven costs 45–55 THB for 640ml. The same beer at a bar is 70–90 THB. Pai travellers routinely buy from 7-Eleven and drink in the street or in hostel common areas before going to bars. No one minds.
Rent a scooter to reach waterfalls and hot springs
Scooter rental from shops on Chaisongkhram Road costs 150–200 THB per day for a 110cc automatic. The Pai Canyon (6km), Mor Paeng Waterfall (8km), and Tha Pai Hot Springs (9km) are all reachable in under 30 minutes. Helmet wearing is practical on this road.
Low season (June to September) means rain but no tourists
The wet season reduces the night bazaar crowd to a fraction of the peak. Many guesthouses close. But Pai in low season — cooler, green, almost empty — is a specific and very different experience from the peak-season traveller circuit.
Scooter accidents are the main risk in Pai
The roads around Pai include steep mountain sections and sharp curves. Scooter accidents are common among travellers, particularly those without riding experience. Ride sober, wear a helmet, and avoid the mountain roads after dark.
