Four days at Gdynia Airport with 30,000 people daily: Poland's most prestigious pop and alternative festival brings international headliners to the Baltic coast every July, an hour from Kraków by bus.
Open'er Festival takes place at Gdynia Airport on the Baltic coast and is most commonly referenced in connection with Kraków because the two cities are frequently combined in itineraries: Kraków for the Old Town and history, Gdynia and Gdańsk (the Tri-City) for the festival and the coast. The festival runs four days in early July and attracts 30,000 people daily with a lineup positioned at the top of the Polish festival market: past headliners have included The Chemical Brothers, Kendrick Lamar, Dua Lipa, and Arctic Monkeys. It is the single most commercially significant music festival in Poland.
The Gdynia Airport site is flat, well-serviced, and designed for large crowds. Camping is on-site; city accommodation in Gdynia or Gdańsk requires a 30–40 minute bus ride to the festival gates. The Tri-City is a fascinating area beyond the festival: Gdańsk's old town and shipyard district, Gdynia's modernist 1930s port architecture, and the resort town of Sopot between them give a week's worth of non-festival content. Kraków to Gdańsk by train takes approximately four hours on the Intercity service from Kraków Główny station, with tickets booking considerably cheaper more than a week in advance. Hostel beds in the Tri-City during Open'er week run PLN 80–150 per night (£16–£30).

Day-by-day breakdown
Gates open at 2pm. The Baltic Sea beach is accessible from Gdynia city centre, 3km from the festival site; the shuttle bus from the festival stops at the station, and the beach is a 15-minute walk from there. Temperature on the Polish Baltic coast in July averages 20–22°C, which is warm but not extreme. The airport stage area has food vendors covering Polish and international cuisine; the Polish bar food (barszcz, placki ziemniaczane) is consistently better than the burger options.
Headliners perform from 9pm on the main stage. The four-day format allows an escalating programme: Friday tends to be the warmup night, Saturday the peak. After midnight, the electronic stages on site continue until 4am for camping guests. City transport back to Gdynia or Gdańsk runs until approximately 1am; after that, taxis or night buses are the options for non-campers. Sopot's beach strip has bars that stay open until 3am and is a worthwhile post-festival destination if you have the energy.
