The limestone karst region around Ninh Binh hosts a small but growing traveller social scene built around boat trips, cycling routes, and hostel evenings in Tam Coc village.
Year-round. The dry season (October to April) is the preferred visiting period; September and October have some rain but the rice harvest makes the karst scenery at its most photogenic.
Ninh Binh province contains Tam Coc (a river valley with limestone karsts rising from flooded rice paddies), Trang An (a UNESCO-listed boat route through cave systems), and Bich Dong Pagoda. The main backpacker base is Tam Coc village, 5km from Ninh Binh city, which has a 500-metre strip of guesthouses, bike hire shops, and restaurants serving standard Vietnamese backpacker food at VND 40,000-80,000 per dish. The social scene is driven by the hostels: Ninh Binh Backpackers Hostel and La Villa Ninh Binh are the most consistently social, running evening barbecues, group bike rides, and nightly bar sessions. A Bia Hoi (fresh draught beer) costs VND 5,000-10,000 (about £0.15-0.30) at local stalls.
The standard itinerary is boat trip in the morning (VND 150,000-200,000 for a 2-hour rowing boat through Tam Coc), cycling the flat rice paddy roads in the afternoon (bike hire VND 50,000-80,000 per day), and hostel bar in the evening. The social concentration is small relative to Hanoi or Hoi An: on a busy night there are perhaps 100-200 backpackers in the Tam Coc village area. What draws people is the landscape, which is genuinely extraordinary, and the fact that it is 90 minutes by train from Hanoi and easy to fit into a week-long north Vietnam itinerary.

Day-by-day breakdown
Rowing boats depart from the Tam Coc boat landing (1km from the village centre) from 7am. The 2-hour trip rows through three cave systems with limestone karsts on both sides. Cost VND 150,000-200,000 per boat (seats 2 people); negotiate at the dock. Go early to avoid tour groups: the 7am departure is significantly quieter than the 9am and 10am slots.
The Ninh Binh Backpackers Hostel runs a rooftop bar from 6pm with views over the rice paddies. Happy hour typically runs 6-8pm with beers at VND 20,000-30,000. Most of the social mixing happens here or at La Villa's outdoor bar area. The village restaurants serve set menus at VND 80,000-120,000 (£2.40-3.60). Bia Hoi at local stalls on the main road costs VND 5,000-10,000 per glass and is where locals drink.
