What Is New York Halloween Parade and Bar Circuit?

The Village Halloween Parade has run annually since 1974, founded by mask maker and puppeteer Ralph Lee as a neighbourhood procession in Greenwich Village. It has grown into an event of 50,000 costumed participants and approximately two million spectators along a 1.5km route up Sixth Avenue from Spring Street to 16th Street. The parade starts at 7pm and takes 2-3 hours to pass a fixed point. Spectators line both sides of Sixth Avenue; the best viewing positions are between Houston and 14th Streets. Barriers go up from 6pm: arrive by 5.30pm for a front position.

New York's Halloween bar circuit runs across the city on the same night and the surrounding weekend. The Meatpacking District and West Village bars are the densest concentration near the parade route. East Village (Avenue B and C) runs its own scene with smaller bars and lower cover charges. The parade itself is free and anyone in costume is welcome to join: registered march groups have designated positions but individual costume-wearers can join the end of the march from Spring Street up until around 7.30pm.

The West Village fills from the early afternoon on 31 October. Bars on Bleecker Street and West 4th open their outdoor seating and are serving from noon. Arrive at your chosen spectator position on Sixth Avenue by 5.30pm at the latest for front-row access. The barriers are staffed from 6pm and pedestrian access across Sixth Avenue closes from 6.30pm. Evening (7pm onwards)

Parade and bar circuit

The parade passes any given point in 60-90 minutes. After it passes, Sixth Avenue reopens and the bar circuit begins. The Meatpacking District is 10 minutes north of the parade end point: clubs here run until 4am and cover charges are $20-40. For cheaper options, head east to the East Village. Bars on St Marks Place and Avenue B have cover charges of $0-15 and run Halloween events until 4am.

Practical Tips

Subway to Christopher Street-Sheridan Square for the parade
The 1 train to Christopher Street-Sheridan Square puts you one block from Sixth Avenue and 400 metres from the parade start point. The station is accessible until around 9pm on parade night before crowds make entry difficult. Consider walking from a nearby station (14th Street, Houston) instead.
New York is expensive: budget USD 100-150 for Halloween night
Cocktails in Manhattan bars cost USD 14-20. Club entry in the Meatpacking District is USD 20-40. A round of drinks for two runs USD 35-50. East Village bars are cheaper: beers at USD 6-9, no or low cover. Budget accordingly.
Book accommodation 6-8 weeks ahead for Halloween week
31 October and the surrounding weekend are among the busiest hotel and hostel nights of the year in New York. Hostels in Manhattan book out; those in Brooklyn (Bushwick, Williamsburg) are cheaper and a 30-minute subway ride away. Book early.
Brooklyn hostels are 40-60% cheaper than Manhattan
Dorm beds in Manhattan hostels run USD 60-100 per night in peak season. Bushwick and Williamsburg in Brooklyn offer dorm beds at USD 35-55 with a 20-30 minute L train connection to Manhattan.
The parade crowds are dense: keep your group together
Two million spectators in a 1.5km corridor is a significant crowd management exercise. Set a meeting point before the parade in case you get separated. Mobile signal is poor in very dense crowds: use a fixed location as a backup plan.
The subway runs 24 hours
New York's subway operates around the clock. The 1, 2, 3 (red) and A, C, E (blue) lines serve the West Village area. Late-night services run every 10-20 minutes on main lines. A single ride costs USD 2.90; an unlimited day pass is USD 13.
