The Village Halloween Parade down Sixth Avenue is the largest Halloween event in the world: 50,000 costumed marchers and two million spectators on a single October night.
Annual, always 31 October. Parade starts at 7pm from Spring Street and Sixth Avenue, moving north to 16th Street.
The Village Halloween Parade has run annually since 1974, founded by mask maker and puppeteer Ralph Lee as a neighbourhood procession in Greenwich Village. It has grown into an event of 50,000 costumed participants and approximately two million spectators along a 1.5km route up Sixth Avenue from Spring Street to 16th Street. The parade starts at 7pm and takes 2-3 hours to pass a fixed point. Spectators line both sides of Sixth Avenue; the best viewing positions are between Houston and 14th Streets. Barriers go up from 6pm: arrive by 5.30pm for a front position.
New York's Halloween bar circuit runs across the city on the same night and the surrounding weekend. The Meatpacking District and West Village bars are the densest concentration near the parade route. East Village (Avenue B and C) runs its own scene with smaller bars and lower cover charges. The parade itself is free and anyone in costume is welcome to join: registered march groups have designated positions but individual costume-wearers can join the end of the march from Spring Street up until around 7.30pm.
