Nacpan Beach Bonfire Nights

What Is Nacpan Beach Bonfire Nights?

Nacpan Beach is a 4km twin beach on Palawan island, 17km north of El Nido town. It is consistently rated among the top beaches in the Philippines: flat white sand, calm water in the dry season, coconut palms along the edge, and almost no development beyond the dozen or so beachfront guesthouses. The social scene is proportional to the setting — small, low-key, and driven entirely by the accommodation. Most guesthouses run nightly bonfires and keep their bars open until midnight. A San Miguel beer costs PHP 50-80 (£0.70-1.10). A rum and Coke costs PHP 80-120.

There are no clubs, no sound systems, and no formal events. The appeal is the combination of the beach itself and a backpacker crowd that is largely self-selecting: people who chose Nacpan over the more accessible beaches near El Nido town tend to socialise easily. The bonfire circuit is informal: some evenings it is three people around a fire, some evenings it is forty. The guesthouses with the best locations on the beach tend to accumulate the most social guests. Hanging Hammock Beach Bar and the guesthouses at the northern headland junction are the most consistently social. Evenings end when people choose to end them.

Getting There

What to Expect

Day-by-day breakdown

Afternoon

Arrive and walk the beach

Tricycles and vans from El Nido town take 45-60 minutes to Nacpan and cost PHP 200-300 (£2.80-4.20) per person in a shared vehicle. The beach is 4km: worth walking the full length on arrival to understand what is there. The northern end (near the junction with Calitang Beach) has the best swimming and the most social guesthouses. The southern end near the main road is quieter and has cheaper accommodation. Check in and let your accommodation know if you want to join a bonfire that evening.

Evening

Bonfire and beachfront bar

Bonfires typically start around 7pm. Most guesthouses either run their own or have an arrangement with neighbouring ones. The Hanging Hammock Beach Bar is a dedicated social venue with hammocks directly over the water and a bar stocked with rum, San Miguel, and basic cocktails. Drinks run until 11pm-midnight at most places. The beach is unlit: bring a torch or use your phone for moving between venues after dark.

Practical Tips

Shared van from El Nido costs PHP 200-300
Shared vans depart from the El Nido town market area from 8am to 2pm daily in peak season. The journey takes 45-60 minutes on a rough road. The last return van from Nacpan typically leaves at 3-4pm: confirm with your driver. After that, you need a private tricycle (PHP 600-800) or to arrange a return the following day.
Book ahead for January and February
Nacpan has limited accommodation: perhaps 15-20 guesthouses and a handful of campsites. The best-positioned ones fill 1-2 weeks ahead in January. Arrive without a booking in peak season and you may need to settle for the least social option.
Cash only: bring PHP from El Nido
There are no ATMs at Nacpan Beach. El Nido town has several ATMs (BDO, BPI, PNB) but they run out in peak season. Bring enough cash for your full stay. Guesthouse rates run PHP 500-1,200 (£7-17) per night for a dorm or basic room.
February is the peak for backpacker social scene
The dry season runs November to May; the social scene peaks January to March when the backpacker crowd is largest. December has more families and couples. February has the best combination of weather, crowd size, and social atmosphere.
The road from El Nido is rough: secure your valuables during the ride
The 17km road to Nacpan is unpaved and potholed. Bags bounce and slide in the back of vans. Keep valuables in your lap or in a closed bag at your feet, not loose in an overhead rack.
Island hopping tours depart from El Nido, not Nacpan
The standard El Nido island hopping tours (Tour A, B, C, D) depart from El Nido town harbour. If you are based at Nacpan and want to join a tour, arrange a return to town the evening before and stay overnight. The tours do not pick up from Nacpan.
