What Is Mykonos Summer Season?

Mykonos Town (Chora) is the hub: a dense maze of whitewashed alleys 700 metres from the port, built to confuse pirates and now equally confusing to first-time visitors navigating between bars at 2am. The town's Little Venice neighbourhood has waterfront cocktail bars that are genuinely scenic and start filling from sunset. Paradise Beach, 6km south of the town by bus or taxi, is where the volume goes: SCORPIOS, Paradise Club, and Tropicana have occupied the beach since the 1970s and the clubs run from midnight to noon the following day in peak season. The clientele skews older and wealthier than the standard backpacker circuit, but the beach itself is mixed.

Mykonos is expensive by Greek island standards and very expensive by backpacker standards. A cocktail at a Mykonos Town bar costs €15-20; a Sun Lounger on Paradise Beach costs €15-25 per day. Club entry is €20-40 with no drink included. Staying in the town at a party hostel rather than a hotel makes the trip economically viable: dorm beds run €30-50 per night in peak season. The reason people come is the combination of a well-organised beach club infrastructure, reliably good weather from June through August, and a social energy that few other European islands match. If the cost does not suit, Ios is 40 minutes away by ferry and does roughly the same thing for less.

Getting There

What to Expect

Day-by-day breakdown

Afternoon

Paraga and beach clubs

The bus from Mykonos Town (Fabrika bus station) to Paraga Beach runs every 30-40 minutes in summer and costs €2. Journey time is 15-20 minutes. The beach clubs open at noon; the main party starts from 3pm with DJ sets. A sun lounger costs €15-25 per day; beach access is free. Drinks at beach bars: cocktails €14-18, beer €8-10.

Late night

Paraga Club and Tropicana

Paraga Club opens at midnight and runs until noon the following day. Entry €20-40; resident and guest DJs play commercial house and techno. Tropicana is the older, more relaxed option on the same beach: it has been running since 1976. SCORPIOS is a separate venue at Paraga Beach, 1km east along the coast, and caters to a more ambient, sunset-focused crowd with a global music policy. Taxis back to the town cost €10-15.

Practical Tips

Ferry from Athens (Piraeus) takes 3.5-5 hours
SeaJets and Hellenic Seaways run daily fast ferries from Piraeus to Mykonos in 3.5-4 hours (€45-70). Slow ferries take 5 hours and cost €20-30. Book ahead in July: peak-season sailings fill. Flying from Athens takes 40 minutes; cost €40-100.
Mykonos is expensive: budget accordingly
A realistic daily budget for Mykonos: dorm bed €35-50, food €25-40, beach entry and drinks €40-60, transport €5-10. Total: €105-160 per day in peak season. This is significantly more than Ios, Paros, or Rhodes for an equivalent experience.
Book dorm beds 3-4 weeks ahead for July and August
The handful of party hostels in Mykonos Town book out quickly for peak summer weeks. Look for Villa Remezzo and similar hostel-style properties. Private rooms in apartments are often cheaper than hostel dorms in the second half of August when demand drops slightly.
The bus network is cheap; taxis are expensive
Local buses from Fabrika square in the town centre serve all the main beaches for €2 per journey. Taxis from the town to Paraga Beach cost €10-15 and are harder to find after 2am. The bus stops at Paraga Beach run until around 1am in peak season.
Ios is 40 minutes away and 50% cheaper
If Mykonos prices are prohibitive, the ferry to Ios runs daily and takes 40-60 minutes. Ios has a similar beach party culture (Mylopotas Beach) at roughly half the price. The crowd on Ios is younger and more backpacker-oriented.
The season ends abruptly in late August
Mykonos's party season peaks mid-July to mid-August and drops sharply from late August. By September, clubs are open only on weekends and beach club operations scale back significantly. If you are coming specifically for the nightlife, arrive before 20 August.
