What Is Mostar Bridge Dive Festival?

Stari Most (Old Bridge) in Mostar was originally built by Ottoman architect Mimar Hayruddin in 1566 and destroyed during the Bosnian War in 1993. Rebuilt and reopened in 2004, it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2005. The bridge spans 29 metres above the Neretva River at its highest point and is 4 metres wide. The diving tradition predates the war: local divers from the Ikari diving club have jumped from the bridge since at least the 16th century, training on the bridge through summer and competing formally each July in the Mostar Diving Competition. The jump is 21 metres; the water below is fast-moving and cold.

The Mostar Diving Competition in late July is the focal event, drawing up to 10,000 spectators to the riverbanks and bridge approaches. Red Bull has used the bridge as a stop on its Cliff Diving World Series in some years, which brings international professional divers. Outside the competition, local club divers train and jump throughout summer: any morning from June through August you can watch divers on the bridge. The old bazaar (Kujundžiluk) and the streets either side of the bridge are full of cafes, bars, and restaurants; prices are low by European standards and the old town is genuinely dense with atmosphere after dark.

Getting There

What to Expect

Day-by-day breakdown

Morning

Old town and bridge area

The bridge is most atmospheric in the early morning before tour groups arrive (before 9am). A coffee in the old bazaar costs BAM 1.50-2.50. The Koski Mehmed Pasha Mosque is a 2-minute walk from the bridge and has a minaret with views over the Neretva (entry BAM 5). The Stari Grad area is compact: you can walk the full old town in 90 minutes.

Evening

Riverside bars and diving competition day

The competition in late July draws spectators to the riverbanks from the early afternoon. Arrive 1-2 hours before the start to get a good position on the eastern bank below the bridge. After the competition, the old town restaurants and bars run until midnight. Ali Baba restaurant in the Kujundžiluk is reliable for grilled meats (BAM 12-18 per main). Beer at riverside bars: BAM 3-5.

Practical Tips

Bus from Sarajevo to Mostar takes 2.5 hours
Regular bus services run from Sarajevo's East Bus Terminal (Autoprevoz) to Mostar throughout the day. Journey time is 2.5-3 hours; cost BAM 15-20 (£6-8). The Mostar bus station is 1km from the old town. A taxi to the bridge costs BAM 5-8.
Competition date is confirmed by the Ikari Club in June
The exact date of the Mostar Diving Competition is announced by the Ikari diving club, usually in June. Follow the club's social media or check with Mostar tourist information (visitmostar.ba) for the confirmed date in your year of travel.
Mostar is cheap by Balkan standards
A dorm bed costs BAM 20-35 per night (£8-14). A full meal at a local restaurant is BAM 12-20 (£5-8). A half-litre of local beer is BAM 3-4 (£1.20-1.60). Mostar is one of the cheapest destinations in Europe for backpackers.
Stay in the old town for the best access
Hostels within the old town area (Stari Grad) are 2-5 minutes from the bridge and the bar strip. Book 1-2 weeks ahead for late July. The old town area fills quickly during the competition weekend.
The Neretva is cold and fast: do not swim casually
The river below the bridge looks inviting but runs cold even in July (14-18°C) and has a strong current. Trained club divers practise for months before jumping from the bridge. Do not attempt an unsupported jump.
Mostar is a logical stop between Sarajevo and Dubrovnik
The bus route from Sarajevo to Dubrovnik passes through or near Mostar. A stop of 1-2 days in Mostar adds minimal time to the journey. The Sarajevo-to-Mostar leg is 2.5 hours; Mostar to Dubrovnik (via Čapljina) is a further 3 hours.
