Each July, divers leap 21 metres from Stari Most bridge into the Neretva River below in a tradition that has run every summer for over 450 years.
Annual. The Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series includes Mostar as a stop in some years; the traditional local diving competition runs independently each July.
Stari Most (Old Bridge) in Mostar was originally built by Ottoman architect Mimar Hayruddin in 1566 and destroyed during the Bosnian War in 1993. Rebuilt and reopened in 2004, it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2005. The bridge spans 29 metres above the Neretva River at its highest point and is 4 metres wide. The diving tradition predates the war: local divers from the Ikari diving club have jumped from the bridge since at least the 16th century, training on the bridge through summer and competing formally each July in the Mostar Diving Competition. The jump is 21 metres; the water below is fast-moving and cold.
The Mostar Diving Competition in late July is the focal event, drawing up to 10,000 spectators to the riverbanks and bridge approaches. Red Bull has used the bridge as a stop on its Cliff Diving World Series in some years, which brings international professional divers. Outside the competition, local club divers train and jump throughout summer: any morning from June through August you can watch divers on the bridge. The old bazaar (Kujundžiluk) and the streets either side of the bridge are full of cafes, bars, and restaurants; prices are low by European standards and the old town is genuinely dense with atmosphere after dark.
