Australia's 'race that stops a nation' turns Melbourne into a week of horse racing, fashion, champagne, and after-parties. Dress up, bet small, and enjoy the spectacle.
Annual. First Tuesday in November.
The Melbourne Cup is not just a horse race. It is a national public holiday in Victoria, a fashion event, a social phenomenon, and an excuse for an entire city to dress up and drink champagne on a Tuesday afternoon. The race itself lasts 3 minutes and 20 seconds. The carnival around it lasts a week.
Flemington Racecourse hosts the four major race days: Derby Day (Saturday), Melbourne Cup Day (Tuesday), Oaks Day (Thursday), and Stakes Day (Saturday). Derby Day is black and white dress code. Cup Day is the main event. Oaks Day is traditionally women-focused (though everyone is welcome). Stakes Day is the most relaxed. General admission starts at AUD 45 and gets you onto the lawns with a view of the straight.
The city transforms during Cup week. Every pub screens the race. Office sweepstakes are a national tradition. The after-parties run from Flemington into the CBD: Federation Square, Southbank, and the laneways of the central city become one extended celebration. Melbourne's cocktail bar scene is world-class and at its most energetic during Cup week.
The backpacker angle is the spectacle rather than the racing itself. You do not need to know anything about horses. Buy a general admission ticket, put AUD 10 on a horse with a name you like, dress up (this is non-negotiable at Flemington), and enjoy a uniquely Australian day out. The people-watching alone is worth the ticket.

Melbourne has an international airport with domestic flights from all Australian cities. SkyBus to the CBD takes 30 minutes.
