France's oldest city throws its best parties in July and August: open-air concerts on the Vieux-Port, electronic music weekenders in the calanques, and a bar scene on Cours Julien that runs until 2am most nights.
Marseille runs a serious summer programme. The Vieux-Port waterfront hosts Les Terrasses du Port and several open-air concert series from June through August, with free and ticketed events drawing crowds for jazz, world music, and electronic sets against the backdrop of Fort Saint-Jean and the MuCEM museum. The main festival is Marsatac, a three-day electronic music event held at Parc Borély in late June or early July, with capacity of around 15,000 and a lineup that focuses on French house, techno, and global bass. Tickets are €25–€45 per day and sell out in advance.
Cours Julien is Marseille's day-to-night neighbourhood: street art, independent record shops, and a cluster of bars and terrace restaurants that run from midday to 2am in summer. The bars here are small and unpretentious — Vidéo Bar, Aux Trois Filles, and Le Balthazar are the reliable options for a long evening that costs considerably less than Paris equivalents. Beer in a Cours Julien bar runs €3–€5. The area is 1 kilometre from the Vieux-Port and 20 minutes on foot from the SNCF Gare Saint-Charles. Later in the night, the clubs along Quai de Rive Neuve on the Vieux-Port south bank carry the crowd: Trolleybus has been running electronic nights since 1994 and hosts some of the city's biggest touring DJs.

Day-by-day breakdown
Start at Cours Julien from around 7pm: aperitif hour, terrace bars, and the animated square that anchors the neighbourhood. Walk down to the Vieux-Port before 9pm to catch the light on the harbour. The bars along Quai du Port on the north side are busier and cheaper than the south bank. OMBRA and La Caravelle (upstairs at the Hôtel Belle Vue) have the best views; drinks run €5–€8.
Trolleybus, on the south side of the Vieux-Port at 24 Quai de Rive Neuve, opens from midnight and runs techno, house, and drum and bass across three rooms. Entry is €10–€15 depending on the night. L'Intermediaire on Boulevard Chave is the indie-rock and live music alternative, running until 2am most nights. Taxis from Cours Julien to the Vieux-Port take 5 minutes and cost €6–€8.
