Uluwatu's surf culture meets Bali's festival calendar: five days of beach competitions, live music, and cliff-top parties drawing surfers and travellers from across the island.
Kuta Karnival began as a surf competition and has expanded into a multi-day beach event covering the stretch of coastline from Kuta south towards Uluwatu. The surf contest component draws professional and amateur competitors across shortboard and longboard categories, with judging on the main Kuta beach break. Evening sessions shift to live music stages set up along Legian Street and on the clifftops above Uluwatu's Padang Padang beach. The crowd is a reliable mix of Balinese locals, Jakarta weekenders, Australian surfers, and backpackers based in Seminyak and Canggu.
Uluwatu's Single Fin bar on the clifftop above the break is the focal point for Sunday sessions during the festival period, attracting 400 to 600 people across its outdoor terraces from around 4pm. Sunset happens around 6:15pm in October; positions on the terrace wall fill by 5:30pm. The temple above the break is open to non-worshippers before 6pm. From a hostel base in Kuta or Seminyak, a taxi to Uluwatu costs around IDR 80,000–100,000 (£4–5) each way; the Blue Bird app gives fixed fares and is the reliable option over street taxis.

Day-by-day breakdown
Competition heats begin on Kuta beach from 7am, running through the morning before conditions soften. The street market along Legian opens from midday with food stalls, craft vendors, and a secondary stage running local bands from 3pm. The main evening stage typically starts at 7pm with Indonesian acts opening for an international headliner around 9pm. Most hostel guests use this day to orient themselves: the beach strip between the Hard Rock and the competition zone is the social centre.
Competition finals run in the morning when the swell is strongest. By early afternoon the crowd migrates south towards Uluwatu for the cliff-top sessions. Single Fin's Sunday session format is adapted for the festival period with extended DJ sets running from 3pm through to 9pm. The drive south from Kuta takes 35–45 minutes depending on Jimbaran traffic. Return transport after 9pm is best arranged through Grab or Blue Bird in advance; scooter hire from Kuta is IDR 60,000–80,000 per day if you are comfortable riding in Bali traffic.
