Cambodia's party island runs bioluminescent night swims, beach bonfires, and bar-hopping on 4K Beach from October through April — a rawer, cheaper version of the Thai island circuit.
Koh Rong is a 78-square-kilometre island in the Gulf of Thailand, 25km off the coast of Sihanoukville. The main tourist hub is Koh Tuch village at the southern tip, where guesthouses, bars, and a handful of hostel operations line the 4K Beach (so named because it stretches four kilometres). The beach party scene is informal rather than organised: bonfires, fire spinners working for tips, and bars staying open as long as there are people drinking. The biggest draw for many people is the bioluminescent plankton in the water around the island, visible on dark nights between October and May when there is little moon. Night swims in bioluminescent water are free, require no guide, and are genuinely one of the more unusual experiences available in Southeast Asia.
The bar scene along 4K Beach is concentrated in the 400-metre strip from the main pier to the end of Koh Tuch village. Tree House Bungalows, Rong Reng Bar, and Coco Bar are consistent fixtures, each running music until 2am or 3am. Monthly events do occur, typically announced on handwritten signs on the pier, but there is no fixed calendar. The most atmospheric nights are around the new moon when the beach is dark enough for the bioluminescence to be visible from the shoreline. Drinks are cheap by any standard: a large Angkor beer runs $1.50–$2, cocktails $3–$5. The island has no ATMs; bring US dollars in cash.

Day-by-day breakdown
4K Beach is the operational base. The sand is white, the water is clear, and there are no motorbikes because there are no roads. Hammocks are available from most guesthouses for $1–$2. The jungle trail across the island to Long Beach (Sok San) takes around 45 minutes on foot and comes out at a near-empty beach with one or two beachside restaurants. Kayak hire from the main pier costs $8–$12 for a half day. Snorkelling gear rents for $3–$5.
Walk into the water off 4K Beach after 9pm on a new moon night and move your hands: the plankton light up blue-green around any movement. It works best in the first 200 metres from shore and is most vivid between November and March. After the swim, the bars along Koh Tuch village are the obvious next stop. Tree House has a fire pit and live acoustic sets most evenings. The bars stay open until the last customers leave, which on busy nights is 3am or 4am.
