Sri Lanka's most consistent party beach runs a beachfront strip of reggae bars, surf shacks, and full moon gatherings along a 3km coral reef coast that has hosted travellers since the 1970s.
Hikkaduwa sits on Sri Lanka's south-west coast, 100km south of Colombo on the Galle Road. A 3km beach runs from the Coral Gardens reef at the north end to Narigama at the south, and the social infrastructure — surf schools, beach bars, guesthouses, and restaurants — lines the landward side of the beach road the whole length. The scene here is older and more established than most of Sri Lanka's tourist circuit; backpackers discovered it in the 1970s, and the reggae bar culture and beach party tradition have continued relatively unbroken since, surviving the 2004 tsunami, civil conflict, and the more recent economic crisis.
The surf is the daily organiser. The reef break at Hikkaduwa beach is suitable for intermediate surfers from November through April when the south-west monsoon is off. Beginner surf spots are further south toward Narigama. Most surf schools run group lessons from £15–£20 and board hire costs £5–£8 per half-day. After 4pm the surfers come in, the beach bars open their sound systems, and the strip transitions from water sport to social. Full moon parties run monthly along the beach, moving between venues — check with your guesthouse or the noticeboards near the main beach area on arrival. The nights with the best attendance are December through March.

Day-by-day breakdown
The Coral Gardens reef at the north end of Hikkaduwa is a five-minute swim from the beach. Glass-bottom boats run from the beach road for around 500 LKR (£1.30) if you prefer not to swim. The reef sustained damage in the 2004 tsunami but has partially recovered — marine turtles feed here year-round. Book a surf lesson for 9am before the offshore wind picks up. A two-hour group lesson including board hire costs £15–£20 from most beach schools.
The stretch from Coral Gardens to Narigama beach road fills from 5pm. Refresh, a long-standing beach bar with direct sea access, is the main anchor for sundowners — a Lion beer costs around 700 LKR (£1.90). Vibrations is the most consistently active evening venue with live DJ sets from 8pm. On full moon nights the party moves to whichever venue is hosting — ask at your guesthouse. Most beach bars close by 1am; a few extend to 2am on full moon nights.
