Three days of metal and rock on the Flugplatz in Interlaken, with 30,000 people per day and the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau as the backdrop: possibly the most scenically dramatic heavy music festival in the world.
Greenfield Festival takes place on the Flugplatz, the former airstrip east of Interlaken town centre, against a direct view of the Bernese Alps. On a clear June day, you can watch a headline metal act from 30 metres back while the Eiger's north face fills the horizon behind the stage. The festival has run since 2005 and draws 30,000 people per day across three days with a lineup focused on metal, rock, punk, and alternative. Past headliners include Rammstein, Tool, and Slipknot. The 16+ age minimum allows for a younger demographic than most Swiss cultural events.
Switzerland's cost of living makes Greenfield an expensive festival by European comparison: beer on site runs CHF 8–10, food CHF 15–25, and the festival pass plus camping represents a significant spend relative to comparable Eastern European events. That said, the site experience is excellent: the Flugplatz camping area is well organised, the Swiss infrastructure means toilets and water points work as described, and the June weather in the Bernese Oberland is usually clear and warm (18–24°C) with the occasional afternoon mountain thunderstorm that passes in 30 minutes. Interlaken itself is a tourist town with limited backpacker hostel options; Balmer's Hostel at Hauptstrasse 23 is the most established party hostel and has its own nightclub.

Day-by-day breakdown
Gates open at noon. The afternoon programme on the Blue Stage and Red Stage starts from 12:30pm. The Flugplatz's flat open space means sightlines are excellent from anywhere on site, and the mountain backdrop is clearest in the afternoon before any heat haze builds. The food area covers Swiss festival standards: Käseschnitte (Alpine cheese on toast), bratwurst, and the inevitable American burger options alongside it.
Main stage headliners perform from around 9pm. The mountains catch the last light long after sunset and remain visible as a silhouette behind the lit stage. The festival site closes at 1am; camping guests can continue at the campsite bars. Balmer's Hostel in the town runs its own club night until 3am on festival evenings, which serves as the primary after-party option for those not camping.
