What Is Festival Internacional de Jazz de Valparaíso?

Valparaíso's jazz festival has run annually since the early 2000s, using the city's geography as its primary asset. The outdoor main stage in Plaza Sotomayor, at sea level near the port gates, holds several thousand standing. Cerro Alegre and Cerro Concepción above it host smaller performances in the plazas between the street-art murals: finding them requires climbing one of the funicular lifts (ascensores) or walking the steep footpaths between them. The mix of free outdoor shows and ticketed theatre events means you can attend the entire festival on a tight budget by prioritising the plaza stages.

Valparaíso in July is cool and frequently overcast: average daytime temperatures run 12–15°C with wind off the Pacific. The city does not dress up for tourists in the way that Santiago does. The Cerro Alegre neighbourhood around Almirante Montt has the highest concentration of restaurants, bars, and hostels. Dorm beds here run CLP 12,000–18,000 (£11–16) a night. The central bus terminal on Pedro Montt connects Valparaíso to Santiago (90 minutes, CLP 3,500–5,500) hourly during the day, making a day trip feasible if you are based in the capital.

Getting There

What to Expect

Day-by-day breakdown

Day 1

Plaza Sotomayor outdoor stage, opening acts

The main outdoor stage in Plaza Sotomayor opens in the early evening. Chilean acts and regional Latin American artists typically fill the first night's programme. The plaza is free and open to all. Food stalls selling empanadas and sopaipillas set up around the perimeter from 5pm. The surrounding port area bars are open late and often run their own informal jazz nights during the festival period.

Day 2

Cerro Alegre hill stages and ticketed theatre night

The hillside stages on Cerro Alegre run afternoon sets accessible by Ascensor El Peral (CLP 200 each way) or a 15-minute walk up Subida Ecuador. The Teatro Municipal on Plaza O'Higgins hosts the main ticketed evening performance, typically featuring the international headliner. Tickets sell through the Municipalidad website and from the theatre box office from 10am on the day.

Practical Tips

Base yourself on Cerro Alegre, not the port flatlands
The hillside neighbourhoods (Cerro Alegre, Cerro Concepción) have better accommodation, better bars, and direct access to the hillside festival stages. The port-level area around Plaza Sotomayor is fine for the main stage but offers little else. Almirante Montt and Urriola are the two streets with the highest concentration of hostels and restaurants.
The ascensores are the fastest way between levels
Valparaíso's funicular lifts (ascensores) connect the port flatlands to the hilltop neighbourhoods. Ascensor El Peral links Plaza Justicia to Cerro Alegre. Ascensor Concepción links Plaza Aníbal Pinto to Cerro Concepción. Each ride costs CLP 200 (approximately 18p). Not all ascensores are operational year-round: check the current status at the base before queueing.
July is winter: bring layers
Valparaíso in July averages 12–15°C with sea winds that make it feel colder in open plazas after dark. A mid-layer fleece and a windproof outer shell are the practical combination. The outdoor stages have no shelter. Afternoon sun is possible but not reliable.
Chilean pesos: withdraw at BancoEstado or Santander
Foreign cards work in most Valparaíso ATMs but transaction fees vary. BancoEstado and Santander branches on Condell and Brasil streets give the most consistent rates. Avoid Redbanc-only ATMs as they charge higher withdrawal fees. Festival food stalls and smaller bars are cash-only.
Santiago day-trippers drive up prices on festival weekend
Cerro Alegre hostels sell out during festival week when Santiago visitors arrive for the weekend. Book at least three weeks ahead. Cerro Concepción (adjacent, slightly quieter) has additional options if Alegre is full. Weekday beds mid-festival are often available at short notice.
The city's street art is the free daytime programme
Valparaíso has one of South America's densest concentrations of outdoor murals. The Cerro Bellavista neighbourhood (a 20-minute walk east of Cerro Alegre) has the highest concentration, including work by Roberto Matta's students in the 1990s. A self-guided walk between the festival's evening sessions takes two hours and requires no entry fee.
