What Is Dumaguete Friday Night Market and Beach Bar Scene?

Dumaguete is a city of 140,000 people on the south-east coast of Negros Island, a 30-minute ferry from Siquijor and a reasonable base for the Apo Island marine sanctuary, one of the best snorkel and dive sites in the Philippines. Silliman University gives the city a younger demographic than most Philippine provincial towns, and the resulting café and bar scene on Rizal Boulevard is noticeably good for the size of the place. The boulevard runs north–south along the seafront, shaded by acacia trees, with a mix of food stalls, restaurants, and open-fronted bars on the landward side.

The Friday Night Market sets up along the Boulevard from around 5pm and runs until midnight: grilled seafood, local desserts, street food, and a live music stage near the pier. It is a local event as much as a traveller one, which keeps the atmosphere genuine. Lab-as Seafood Restaurant and Why Not Resto-Bar are the two long-standing institutions on the Boulevard — both open late on weekends with live acoustic sets. Gabby's Bistro further south does cheap San Miguel and draws a mixed student and backpacker crowd from around 8pm. Dumaguete does not do late nights by Thai island standards, but Friday through Sunday from 7pm until around midnight is reliably social.

Getting There

What to Expect

Day-by-day breakdown

Daytime

Apo Island day trip or Rizal Boulevard walk

Apo Island Marine Sanctuary is a 45-minute boat ride from Malatapay port (30km south of Dumaguete). Shared tours depart Malatapay between 9am and 11am and cost around £20–£25 including the marine sanctuary fee. The coral coverage is exceptional by regional standards. Back in town, the Silliman University campus and the adjacent Anthropology Museum are worth an hour in the afternoon.

Friday Evening

Night market on Rizal Boulevard

The Friday Night Market starts setting up at 5pm. Grilled pusit (squid) and isda (fish) cost 80–150 PHP at the seafood grills near the main stage. A 500ml San Miguel from a roadside vendor costs 55–70 PHP. The live music stage runs acoustic sets from 7pm. Arrive before 7:30pm for seating at the boulevard restaurants. After the market winds down, Why Not and Gabby's Bistro run until 1am or later.

Practical Tips

Book Apo Island the night before
Tours from Dumaguete depart from Malatapay port, 30km south. Most hostels in Dumaguete can arrange shared vans and boat bookings for around £20–£25 all-in. Independent travel to Malatapay by tricycle and habal-habal is possible and cheaper but adds two hours. A marine sanctuary fee of around £3 is payable on arrival at the island.
Siquijor is a 30-minute ferry away
Oceanjet and Weesam Express run multiple daily ferries between Dumaguete pier and Siquijor. Journey time is 30–45 minutes; fares around 180–220 PHP (£3–£4). Siquijor is quieter and draws a different crowd — good for a one-night side trip before returning to Dumaguete.
The live music scene is student-led and free
Silliman University produces a steady stream of bands and acoustic acts who play in the Boulevard bars from Wednesday through Sunday. Cover charges are rare. Why Not Resto-Bar on the Boulevard has the most consistent live music programme; check their Facebook page for the weekly schedule.
Typhoon season affects boat schedules
The Visayas region sees typhoon activity from July through November. Apo Island boats and Siquijor ferries are cancelled in bad weather without much notice. Build flexibility into your schedule from August through October. December through May is consistently calm.
ATMs on Rizal Boulevard and around the market
BDO, BPI, and Metrobank all have branches within three blocks of the Boulevard. They run reliably and accept foreign Visa and Mastercard. Transaction fees are around 200 PHP per withdrawal. Daily budget in Dumaguete runs £20–£35.
Getting to Dumaguete
Cebu Pacific and Philippine Airlines fly Manila to Sibulan Airport (Dumaguete) in about 1 hour 15 minutes; fares start at £25–£40. Cebu to Dumaguete by fast ferry (Oceanjet/Supercat) takes 2.5 hours and costs around £10–£15. The Sibulan Airport is 4km north of town; tricycles cost 30–50 PHP to the Boulevard.
