What Is Colombo Colombo Street Party?

Colombo's nightlife has developed rapidly since the end of the civil war in 2009 and the subsequent economic opening, with a cluster of rooftop bars, wine bars, and clubs forming in the Colombo 3 (Kollupitiya) and Colombo 7 (Cinnamon Gardens) postcodes. The Galle Face Green, a colonial-era oceanfront promenade running 500 metres between the Fort district and the Galle Face Hotel, is the city's social outdoor space: families, couples, and groups gather here every evening to eat from street food stalls, fly kites, and watch the Indian Ocean at sunset.

The drinking and club circuit operates within certain local constraints: alcohol is not served on Poya (full moon) days, which occur monthly, and in the days around elections. Outside those restrictions, bars in Colombo 3 run until 1am or 2am. The Galle Face Hotel terrace is the colonial-era choice for a sunset cocktail (LKR 1,200–1,500 per drink). Cloud Red on the 30th floor of a building in Colombo 3 is the highest-elevation bar in the city. The Dutch Hospital Precinct in the Fort district is a colonial warehouse development that houses several bars and restaurants in a car-free courtyard, open nightly until midnight.

Getting There

What to Expect

Day-by-day breakdown

Evening

Galle Face sunset and Dutch Hospital

Walk the Galle Face Green from around 5:30pm for the sunset over the Indian Ocean. The street food vendors set up along the seawall selling kottu roti, isso wade (prawn fritters), and king coconuts for LKR 100–300. The Galle Face Hotel terrace is 100 metres south of the Green and does a proper sunset cocktail at hotel prices (LKR 1,200+) in an appropriate setting. After sunset, take a tuk-tuk (LKR 200–400) to the Dutch Hospital Precinct in Fort for dinner and a post-dinner drink in the atmospheric courtyard.

Night

Colombo 3 bars and rooftops

The bar cluster in Colombo 3 around R.A. De Mel Mawatha and the side streets off it runs from around 9pm. Nuga Gama at Cinnamon Grand Hotel is a village-themed courtyard bar. Ministry of Crab's bar section at the Old Dutch Hospital is open late for cocktails. Cloud Red rooftop at Colombo 3 has city and ocean views and cocktails running LKR 1,500–2,500. For clubs: Zaza Club at Savoy Hotel, Ministry of Sound Colombo, and Altitude at the Hilton run Thursday through Saturday until 2am, with entry LKR 500–1,500 including a drink.

Practical Tips

Poya days
Alcohol is not served anywhere in Sri Lanka on Poya (full moon) days, which occur monthly. Check the Poya calendar before planning a night out in Colombo. These dates are fixed by the lunar calendar and change each month.
Tuk-tuks
Tuk-tuks are the standard way to move between bars. PickMe and Uber both operate in Colombo and are recommended over hailing on the street at night. Standard Colombo 3-to-Fort journey costs LKR 300–500 via app.
Heat and humidity
Colombo is hot and humid year-round: 28–33°C with high humidity. Outdoor evening venues are bearable but you will sweat. Air-conditioned bars and clubs feel like relief. Dress lightly and carry a handkerchief.
Prices
Sri Lanka's 2022 economic crisis pushed prices up significantly. Beer at a local bar runs LKR 500–700; cocktails at rooftop venues LKR 1,200–2,500. Budget LKR 3,000–6,000 for a full night out including transport.
Dutch Hospital Precinct
The Dutch Hospital in Fort Colombo is a 17th-century Dutch warehouse compound restored as a bar and restaurant complex. It is car-free, atmospheric, and walkable from the Fort railway station. Open daily until midnight; no entry fee.
Safety
Central Colombo (Fort, Colombo 3, Galle Face area) is safe for visitors at night. Avoid walking alone in unfamiliar areas after midnight. PickMe or Uber is the right call for late-night returns to hostels or hotels.
