Rhineland Carnival is one of Europe's largest street parties: five days in February when 1.5 million people descend on Cologne in costume for a city-wide celebration that starts at 11:11am on the Thursday.
Cologne Carnival (Kölner Karneval) is the Rhineland's answer to Mardi Gras, drawing 1.5 million visitors over five days in the week before Ash Wednesday. The official start is Weiberfastnacht (Women's Carnival Thursday) at exactly 11:11am at the Alter Markt, when the Carnival Mayor hands over the city keys to the Carnival Queen. From that moment until midnight on Shrove Tuesday, the city operates under different rules: costumes are mandatory at any venue worth going to, Kölsch beer flows at around €3.50–€4.50 per 200ml glass in the traditional stangen format, and the entire city centre is essentially one continuous party.
The Rose Monday parade (Rosenmontag) is the centrepiece: 10,000 participants, 30 floats, and several hours of procession through the city from Severinskirche to the city centre, with 700,000 spectators. Attending requires arriving by 10am to secure a viewing position; the candy, chocolate, and flowers thrown from floats ('Kamelle') are genuinely caught rather than symbolically scattered. The areas around the Altstadt (old town) and Zülpicher Strasse (the student quarter) are the most accessible for visitors. Zülpicher Platz, known as the 'Kwartier Latäng', is the most concentrated street-party point with the densest costume crowd outside of the formal events.

Day-by-day breakdown
The Rosenmontag parade is the single most important event of Carnival week. The route runs from Severinskirche north through Chlodwigplatz, along the ring roads to the city centre and finishes near Heumarkt. Arrive at your chosen viewing spot by 10am; the parade starts around 10:30am and takes 4–5 hours to pass any given point. Bring a bag for the Kamelle (sweets, chocolates) thrown from floats — collecting them is part of the experience. After the parade ends around 3pm, the street parties continue into the night throughout the Altstadt.
The traditional Cologne Carnival pub experience is in the Altstadt, in the lanes around Alter Markt and Heumarkt. Päffgen on Heumarkt and Früh am Dom on Am Hof are the two most well-known Kölsch brewpubs: the waiters (Köbes) carry trays of 200ml Kölsch glasses and will replace your empty without being asked until you cover your glass with the coaster. Zülpicher Strasse, 20 minutes on foot from the Altstadt, is where the student crowd and backpackers end up after midnight, with the streets themselves functioning as a party space. The city's bars close much later than usual during Carnival week.
