What Is Cairns Festival?

Cairns Festival runs for twelve days in late August and early September, timed to the dry season end when temperatures are rising but humidity has not yet reached the wet-season peak. The festival is anchored by two main public events: the Grand Parade along the Esplanade, which involves floats, marching bands, and community groups walking the 2km Esplanade path from Shields Street to the Lagoon; and the Spiegeltent programme, a travelling performance venue erected at Fogarty Park for the duration of the festival, hosting circus, cabaret, and music acts across all twelve days.

The Cairns Esplanade itself is the festival's main outdoor venue: the lagoon area at the southern end, the man-made swimming lagoon that substitutes for beach swimming in crocodile and stinger-risk waters, serves as the setting for the main fireworks display on the opening Friday night. Attendance at the fireworks draws an estimated 50,000 people to the Esplanade, which is roughly the entire population of central Cairns. The rest of the festival programme spreads across the Tanks Arts Centre (four World War II-era oil storage tanks converted to arts spaces), the Cairns Performing Arts Centre, and various public parks. Most events are free; the Spiegeltent shows require ticketing and book out for the popular cabaret acts within a week of programme release.

What to Expect

Day-by-day breakdown

Daytime

Arts Centre programme and Tanks

The Tanks Arts Centre on Collins Avenue, 5km from the Esplanade, is worth a trip during festival week: the converted tanks host visual art installations, live music in an extraordinary acoustic environment, and outdoor film screenings in the evenings. Entry to the Tanks gallery is typically free during the festival. The Esplanade itself has food trucks operational from noon through the festival, serving a mix of Australian and Asian-influenced food reflecting Cairns' substantial Southeast Asian community.

Evening

Spiegeltent and Esplanade fireworks

The Spiegeltent programme at Fogarty Park begins at 7:30pm. The opening Friday night fireworks display over the lagoon starts at 8pm; position along the Esplanade boardwalk from the lagoon entrance north for the best viewing angles. Most families leave after the fireworks, and the bars on Shields Street and The Esplanade fill from 9pm with the post-fireworks crowd. The Woolshed on Shields Street is Cairns' most consistently recommended backpacker pub and runs late on festival nights.
