What Is Bologna Aperitivo Circuit?
Bologna has the highest concentration of university students per capita of any Italian city — around 100,000 students in a city of 400,000 — and the aperitivo culture here is shaped by that ratio. The system works as follows: between 6pm and 9pm most evenings, you order a drink at a bar and the food spread is included in the price of the drink. At many establishments, this is not a handful of crisps — it is a full hot and cold buffet with pasta, salumi, bruschetta, and vegetables. A single Aperol spritz at €6–€7 constitutes dinner if you play it right.
The main aperitivo areas are Via del Pratello, a narrow street west of the centre with working-class bars and a neighbourhood feel; the Quadrilatero market area around Via Clavature; and the student bars around Via Zamboni near the university. Via del Pratello is the most local of the three and has around fifteen bars in 400 metres. Cantina Bentivoglio on Via Mascarella doubles as a jazz venue from 9pm and is worth knowing about if you want music after the aperitivo. After 10pm the night moves toward clubs: Link on Via Fantoni is the main alternative and electronic venue, capacity around 1,500, with DJ nights running Thursday through Saturday.
